I've been running Firefox successfully on my Windows 10 PC for a long while now. Last night, for some reason it simply ceased to work. New windows and tabs would not load any content. I also couldn't access the Settings at all (clicking on Settings in the browser menu produces no results or feedback.)
Yesterday, I had Firefox open all day (I usually have my computer on all day), and it was working fine. Around 8 or 9pm, I first noticed that none of my open tabs were loading any content, and the tabs had the "loading" animation playing. New tabs would also not load any content. I assumed it was an internet issue as I did see my internet connection get disrupted once or twice. I did not see anything (apps, etc) on my PC updating.
This morning I found Firefox was still not loading anything, although my internet connection was fine. I tried opening Chrome, and it ran just fine. Everything else that it is internet or cloud based on my PC is running fine too. So it seems to be an issue just with Firefox.
I have listed my steps to troubleshoot below, but I want to note one weird thing I observed: Even when Firefox is closed, and Task Manager doesn't show any Firefox processes open, my PC seems to think Firefox is running. For ex. while trying to uninstall Firefox or delete certain files, I would get a warning to "close Firefox first" or "can't perform this action while app is running." After seeing these, I would again confirm that Firefox appears closed and Task Manager shows no related tasks.
Things I have tried for troubleshooting already:- I have WebRoot on my computer due to my job, and I asked our IT staff if they could see WebRoot blocking anything related to Firefox on their end. They said it was not.- Used "Firefox Refresh"- Uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox- Cleared app cache / app data- Updated Windows from 20H2 to 21H2
I assumed this was a WIndows 11 thing, and was just about to send off a negative missive to MS, but Edge has a much wider scroll bar, as does Chrome, so it must be a Firefox thing, or Fiefox thing under Windows 11. Is the width of the vertical Scroll Bar on a Firefox Window customisable, becuase I find it far too thin at the moment (not all firefox users are under 65), and a real pain to use, so much so that if it stays the same I'll have to reluctantly change to using Chrome or Edge, just for the usablility and ergonomics. Thanks.
I am also having this problem. It does not occur on all web sites or web applications. However, in many applications the vertical scroll bar is extremely narrow, and in some applications I cannot even see a vertical scrollbar in Firefox, meaning that it is no longer possible for me to do vertical scrolling with my favorite browser. (I do not have this problem in other browsers.)
Notably, an organization I work with requires me to use Outlook webmail to access their email server, but I no longer can see or use the vertical scrollbar in Firefox (but Google Chrome works fine). Some potentially relevant information about this Outlook webmail installation:
In another discussion in this area, I learned that I can get scrollbars back by going to "Visual Effects" in the Accessibility menu in Windows 11 settings, then selecting "Always show scrollbars." That worked!
But I so use X without thinking, that I have lost another load of tabs (that I reconstructed partially--they don't all show up in history unless every one has been opened in the last session, something I never, ever do) by using the wrong means to shut down FireFox.
Three is fine. I was caught by surprise, not aware I had more than one window open, bbc I was taking a test and the test opened several on its own. So I closed the main window and found several others open. Closed those (I think at that point the game was already up, I couldn't restore the main window) and found I couldn't restore anything.
I have the same problem. I've instructed Firefox to open new windows in tabs, but it doesn't always do that.Further, when I'm using my online e-mail, replies are in new "little windows" and when something sets dozens of cookies FF crashes. And there go all my tabs. Again. And no, three is not enough.
Hi nordvie, when Firefox crashes and does an automatic session restore at your next startup, all of the windows and tabs open at the time of the crash should be restored. There is no limit on the number of open windows and tabs that are restored. It sounds as though your Firefox is not doing a crash recovery, or that your Firefox might be set not to store session history.
It's spotty. Sometimes it does, sometimes not. Same thing when there's a power outage.Sometimes, despite my exiting step-by-step, I get just the last window (usually an empty e-mail response in progress if not just initial tabs.Where do I go, please, to be sure I've done everything possible to set it to store session history?Under Options, at General, I've set to Restore to previous session and at>History to use custom settings, and save Browsing and Download history. There's a button to "Clear History" but it doesn't appear to have settings available.I had when the new interface presented on update, temporarily checked Clear history when Firefox closes, and under the Settings Button unchecked Download & Browsing History, Active Logins and Offline Website Data, then "unchecked" the Clear History box. It'd be nice to have it clear everything else, but I hadn't time then to read up on it. It seems the last update might have re-set to a hard clear? It'd be nice to have a 1-step "Clear History" that would clear what I wanted it to, but otherwise honor the same settings as the "Clear when Firefox closes" but I wanted to avoid clearing anything in the event of a power outage.Should I be doing anything differently to have the session restore functionality as you've described"
it's best NOT to check the box for "Clear history when Firefox closes" but if you do, the Settings button to the right will become enabled and you can make sure you aren't clearing Browsing & Download History. If you get any kind of recovery, this probably is fine.
By step-by-step, I mean closing any open windows but the main window. Those are usually e-mails in process, and their being restored with content depends on the e-mail server's being open ... which it can't be in a one-step restoration. So if they're important enough to not start over, I save them to .txt, and shut them down, till only the main window with its tabs is openj. Thanks so much for what you do!
Thanks tons!I only set the options for the Clear History when FF closes as double insurance, then unchecked the Clear History when... button before closing the tab in which I'd opened options. Here's hoping for next power outage!Thank you again.
By default, Firefox may take up to 15 seconds to update the recovery.jsonlz4 file, so if you are making a lot of changes quickly toward the end right before exiting, I think it's possible that some changes could get lost. But logically, that should leave more windows open, not fewer, so... hmm...
I agree. I'll be using the FF Exit command, and maybe that will help, at least for when we don't have a power outage.Back when, it worked then, too. I'd rather reconstruct tabs with history, though, than use Google product, So you folks have been a great help already! Thanks again.
When I open Firefox, I get the expected tile on my taskbar that says Firefox. Anytime I want to open an additional Firefox window instead of a new tab, I right click this tile and a small pop-up menu appears as follows:
However, several months back, this menu started showing "Firefox (2)". I don't know what I did, but it soon turned into "Firefox (3)" and has stayed there. Lately, my computer has been slowing down and I'm now trying to see if this is a factor. Here's what I now always see in the pop-up menu:
Even though the number is 3 in my taskbar tile menu, to open even one tab of Firefox makes Task Manager show Firefox (5). Perhaps that higher quantity had been there all along and I just never noticed. Ending task on any one or all of them makes no difference as they will re-happen when I close and reopen Firefox. Maybe this is unrelated to my "Firefox (3)" problem, I dunno.
Assuming it WAS related, I uninstalled Firefox several times, no change. I refreshed it, no change. I turned off something called e10s, still no change to my tile menu. Somehow in all this, I finally turned off the multiple instances of Firefox in Task Manager and now only have one instance listed there PER FIREFOX WINDOW, not one for each tab contained in each window. Maybe this is the e10s thing I turned off. I'm sorry that I can't recall how I accomplished that but one must close out all tabs each time to test what changes, and I forgot to write down what I did here. It was some option I toggled in the about:config page.
Hi, this bug happens when you have pinned and unpinned, then re-pinned in a different way - such as from the Start Menu then from a Desktop shortcut, and if you do this, unpinning does not remove the icon from the User Pinned file, so there are now 2 (or more) copies.
To fix this, first you need to show hidden files and folders: Control Panel > Appearance - Folder options > Show hidden files and folders > View tab > Show hidden files, folders, and drives.
Now in This PC, double click the C drive to open it, > Users > (your name) > App Data > Roaming > Microsoft > Internet Explorer > Quick Launch > User Pinned > Taskbar, then right click and Delete Firefox.
Finally, go back and hide hidden files and folders again: Control Panel > Appearance - Folder options > Show hidden files and folders > View tab > Don't show hidden files, folders, and drives.
It is only the Firefox icon that I "pin to taskbar" that brings up the "Firefox (3)" in its menu list when right-click on it. The individual Firefox taskbar tiles do not do this. I wish I could edit my OP to have made this clear, sorry.
I reinstalled Firefox again this morning with Refresh option and the (3) is still there. At this point, the only thing I have modified in about:config is "browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent"to get my new tabs to open on the far right.
