The series tells the story of the historical gladiator-turned-rebel leader Spartacus, but drenched in an over-the-top aesthetic lifted directly from 300. Blood, sex and intrigue abound. Andy Whitfield stars in the first season, Spartacus: Blood and Sand as the eponymous Thracian.
After the first season, a half-length prequel season was produced called Spartacus: Gods of the Arena due to Whitfield's cancer diagnosis. Ultimately, after Whitfield's death, he was replaced in the lead role by Liam McIntyre for the third and fourth seasons, Spartacus: Vengeance and Spartacus: War of the Damned.
STARZ is bringing back Spartacus for Thanksgiving. After the recent news that it had officially greenlit a sequel series, Spartacus: House of Ashur, the network is celebrating with a marathon over the holiday weekend exclusively on the STARZ linear network including all episodes of the epic first season, Spartacus: Blood and Sand. The episodes will be available to start binging on November 25 at 2:00 p.m. ET/PT with episodes 101-106 with the back half of the season comprised of episodes 107-113 to follow on November 26 from 2:10 p.m. ET/PT.
Spartacus: Blood and Sand premiered on the network back in 2010 and became a hit with viewers as it continued its run. Created by Steven S. DeKnight and starring Andy Whitfield as the titular Thracian gladiator and rebel legend, the first season follows his fight for survival as he's thrown into slavery away from his homeland and loved ones and condemned to fight in the arena. The love for the sword-and-sandal series with a political edge eventually sprouted into a prequel chapter, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena in 2011 followed by two sequels in Spartacus: Vengeance in 2012 and Spartacus: War of the Damned in 2013.
It's fitting that STARZ is bringing Spartacus back to where it all began as House of Ashur will pick up with a twist on where the story left off upon its end in 2013. Rather than be a direct continuation, it will instead beg the question of what would've happened if the villainous Ashur (Nick Tarabay) had avoided death on Mount Vesuvius and instead returned as a champion, taking control of the gladiator school once owned by Batiatus and being hailed as a hero by the Romans for helping squash Spartacus and the slave rebellion. Of course, it will feature much of the same that made the original series such a hit in the first place, while bending its history into something new and intriguing. That said, it won't include its titular protagonist, barring Liam McIntyre, who took over for Whitfield in future seasons, coming back as a zombie.
Catch the Spartacus: Blood and Sand marathon exclusively on the STARZ linear network this Thanksgiving weekend, starting at 2:00 p.m. ET/PT on November 25 and continuing at 2:10 p.m. ET/PT on November 26. All four seasons of the original series are currently streaming on the STARZ app in the U.S. Stay tuned here at Collider for more on Spartacus: House of Ashur as work continues on the sequel series.
