MATERIAL development, though important, can lead to prosperity only if
it is backed by spiritual development.
Money and power, which are considered the main sources of happiness in
these materialistic times, can also become a bane for humanity.
Therefore, material and spiritual development must always go together.
Spirituality is essential for human development. Human beings and
animals are different from each other in that the former have the
capacity to think.
This capacity can be utilised to develop spirituality. Human beings
are also more intelligent than other creatures and, hence, can view
reality from various angles. And this is the source of conflicts
amongst human beings. Ironically enough, it is human intelligence
which can resolve these contradictions.
Spirituality can be viewed at two levels. While, on one plane we have
spirituality based on religious faiths, on the other plane, we have
spirituality without any particular religion or faith-one which a
person follows by simply trying to be a good human being.
I am trying to promote the latter, which basically implies oneness of
international human community and it can be attained through genuine
compassion.
Not only is human compassion, which emerges from a genuine concern for
the rights of others, a source of inner strength, it also provides
peace of mind to its adherents.
However, spirituality comprises elements, such as moksha, nirvana
(Liberation) and the Creator, which cannot be comprehended by ordinary
mortals. On a certain level, these are really insecurable. This can be
attained only through meditation. It is at this juncture that
spirituality based on religious faith comes into focus.
