I'm currently working with Adobe Illustrator 2020 and have been working on a few projects where when I save over my .ai file, to save any changes, the file instead saves a .temp file. This is pretty unusual and frustrating since the save process finishes and I think my edits are good but then exit out and realize they have not saved over. It had previously worked but for some reason stopped. Any advice is much appreciated, thank you.
You just hit save on an old file? That's very bad idea, because then Illustrator saves to the old version. "Save as" any old file you edit. After you have saved it to a current version, you can go on and just save it.
I don't know the rules that Catalina is now enforcing. I just checked both in Illustrator 2020 and InDesign 2020 and neither of them need to be registered with Security & Privacy preferences to write over an existing file in a non-System-related folder.
Sorry to hear about your experience. This is really unusual. We see no issues like this while saving files on Illustrator 2020. I'd recommend resetting preferences of the app. Please follow instructions below to do that:
**Please note that resetting preferences will remove all the custom settings and Illustrator will launch with default settings. This way all your old settings will be saved in .old folders and Illustrator will recreate new folders with default settings.
Yup, it's antivirus! I got the same problem when the file saves as a temp file. I have AVG antivirus- go settings, general settings, blocked/allowed apps - list of allowed apps and click illustrator. It worked for me.
Tried everything in this thread with no luck, then I found something in another forum that solved it for me, I'm using Avast antivirus and it seems that it was preventing Illustrator from saving, In Avast go to Menu>Options>Blocked Apps and if Illustrator is blocked remove it, and if it isn't add it to the permited apps
AVG antivirus (and, by extension, Avast, since Avast bought AVG) has/have been causing huge and often fatal problems on windows 10 machines. I am a tech and have found often the only way to recover from these frequently BSOD failures is to uninstall the AVG. It appears that AVG was causing this problem as well. Don't get me wrong -- I've always been a huge fan of AVG, but it looks like their program is now more trouble than it's worth. I've read comments that Windows Defender alone is equally effective. Thanks to the other posters who pointed me in this direction -- I was losing my mind. Not an Illustrator problem at all -- it was AVG.
I have to save my homework as Ai and also as PDF ,but i get this message and now this week i have to save it PNG to post it for our school discussion board. I am pretty new to illustrator so i need the steps to fix this, please.
How are you required to post it on the discussion board? If you can use the AI (part) I believe nothing is wrong, with its only being a warning after all. You may find the PDF part lacking. Or you can save as AI without the compatibility for that purpose.
-Restart Computer
-Creative Cloud logged in
-Launched Illustrator from the Creative Cloud.
-Launched Illustrator by clicking twice on the old file (can't do this with new files because I can't create and save any new files onto my computer.)
-Open old files through the cloud
-Created new files in every way IMAGABLE.
Sorry about this trouble. This issue has been reported with multiple apps on macOS Monterey. We're currently investigating this issue. I would request if you could post this issue on our UserVoice page and share the link here.
We are sorry to hear about your experiences. It seems Apple has fixed this issue. Please update to macOS Monterey v12.1 that Apple released around mid-December. Let us know if you are still facing this issue after updating. We'll be happy to look into it.
I fixed my issue by playing around with which display I was using. E.g. turn off my secondary display and go through the saving process on primary. It seems to sort it after some experimenting and doesn't seem to occur again. I'm not experiencing the issue anymore after doing this for multiple adobe apps.
Is there a solution for this yet? This is crazy! I tried the suggestion to set default display as laptop and that made another window appear, but it was blank and just froze me out of being able to do anything.
I'm also having the same issue with Chrome if I set it to ask where to download, so I know this is a Mac OS issue, but I can turn off that setting in Chrome. I don't think there's any way to temporarily fix the Adobe issue.
I tried changing the name of two folders in Appplication Support as some people wrote, but had no success. The problem only gets away using the macbook display as primary, and resetting Illustrator prefs at launch (cmd+opt+shift). Not the best solution, but I can work almost flawlessly.
There is an Ai 2022 PreRelease available in Creative Cloud that seems to have solved the issue. Go to the CC app and scroll down on the left find Pre Release. You willl be able to use this app and keep the Ai 22 in your system. You WILL need to copy your prefs and setting over manually.

Me respondo a m mismo.

( Macbook Pro 2018 - macOs Montery 12.0.1 )
Since 2 days Illustrator CC (latest version, Macbook Pro M1) won't save on my computer anymore... I realy don't know what caused this. It still does save (and overwrite original) when I close the document, but save as, export, export for web etc don't work at all. If I use these commands, there is nothing happening, no dialog box at all?
In previous versions of Illustrator I could work on a project and have an Artboard that had additional content around it and when I choose to Save the Artboard Image ONLY I could check the use Artboard box and the PDF would be created for only the content ON THE ARTBOARD not the additional stuff around the work I wanted to use either for Print or the Web.
Previous workspaces in Illustrator had placeholder space for additional stuff and worked like a scrapbook around the Artboard or Artboards I had active for that documents workspace. I would choose Save As and choose PDF and check the box to save ONLY the Artboard image.
Now the process is a pain in the ass. I work on a Artboard in the documents workspace and I cannot choose to save ONLY the Artboard content to PDF. What I have to do is CROP out everything else in the documents workspace and loose all the assets that where in the documents workspace (they would then be gone and I could not do substitutions etc from the AI (Illustrator file).
If you want to get rid of items outside the artboard (and these should not touch the artboard), uncheck the "Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities" when saving as PDF. Be sure to have a copy of your original Illustrator file.
As you can see in the image above when I tried to Save As or Save a Copy (the same image occurs with no checkbox for use Artboard) the "Use Artboard" option is no longer available. In previous versions of Illustrator all I had to do was choose Save As, select PDF and I could check "Use Artboard" and a PDF file was created of only the content within the Artboard with everything else being ignored.
When I make business cards for my products I have the images of different products outside of the artboard (usually2 to 3) and I swap the images into the artboard space and adjust the Text description and then choose Save As a PDF with Use the Artboard for the PDF. Now I cannot do this and I have to use the Crop Tool before using Save As a PDF . . . more steps.
In essence Adobe has broken creating a PDF of only the art on a single artboard and now I would have to have 2 or more artboards in a document file for extracting only the art to two or more PDF Files.
I have copied my Business Card Artboard by Option dragging the original artboard and now I have 2 images and when I choose Save As PDF I have 2 PDFs in a document of the same image. Which means I have to delete one of these images from the PDF file.
However the solution is to have at least 2 artboards in a Illustrator file and when Saving As to a PDF (where the Use Artboards is auto checked) Choose Range and delete 1- 2 and put 1 in and Save. This creates a single PDF file. Correct?
Workflow-wise this means every document that you now want to make a PDF save of only 1 artboard has to have 2 Artboards in the document for the Use Artboard option to be available and one has to choose Range and change the value to 1. The warning is that only Artboard 1 will be saved to PDF and if you want only Artboard 2 to be saved to PDF then 2 (for Artboard 2) must be inputted. I guess that adding at least one more Artboard in a document (any size) is a workaround that works.
