Itried to back up all my files last night and they seem to have vanished from my laptop and are now only on my dropbox. When I tried to download them back to my mac, all of my powerpoints now have a spaceship symbol next to them (word and excel documents still have the normal symbol next to them and open fine) and wont open. Dropbox says there is an error previewing them but gives me the option to download however when I download my laptop says there is no availible application to open the document with (depsite it being a ppt and I have ppt). I have no idea what to do as im new to dropbox and fear I may have lost 3 years of uni work.

Thanks, I've managed to access my iCloud drive however they aren't on the iCloud drive either or in my recently deleted on iCloud. Furthermore the un-openable files have no vanished from my dropbox app. I have no idea what's happened? Any more suggestions?

Hi Mark, it was the desktop software powerpoint. Once I add the link I uploaded the file to docsend and then reviewed the docsend link to find that nothing happens at all when it gets to the page with the video. This does work with the desktop verison of word however but thats not a solution because you can't neatly convert a powerpoint file to word. Beleive me I have tried. The best that docsend support could say was "it works fine for us!". Useless lot.
There is no error. When any user, including myself, reaches that slide when viewing through a docsend link, nothing happens. No error message, no play button. It's as if nothing was embedded before. And as I say, it does work with Microsoft word.
In the last couple of days I've been presented to on Zoom, and twice the screen being shared has got stuck / frozen from my perspective - the presenter sees their slide progress or moving back to a Powerpoint slide from a video, but what I see stays the same.
Their video of them, and audio, continues fine so its not a total system freeze, weirdly I can even see their Mouse moving on what they think the new screen is! So might be a powerpoint specific issue?
Yes I believe they were doing it correctly, one was using 1 screen only, the other I think had 2 and was sharing their primary as suggested. It worked fine once they restarted sharing in both instances.
Interestingly, this is happening to me regularly and appears to be getting worse. I am presenting power point on Zoom, the share stops, I go out and restart the slides then they do not move and I struggle to close. Have to come out completely from Office 365 and restart. Does anybody have any fixes please? LorraineMac
I've used Maps for Office a lot with Excel over the years, but the integration with Powerpoint newer hooked me that much, so for me it is not a big loss. As stated above, there was an issue when sharing the slides to others that did not have the integration installed or don't have an ArcGIS account.
The Storymap substitution is at good solution. But if it is just one interactive map I want to share, then I often end up publishing it in ArcGIS Online as a webapp and just put the share-URL into the slide for people to open the browser. Much similar to the Storymap-solution.
@LarsElmkr_Chwastek It is great that you are thinking of including interactive maps for presentations. In my practice, I have transitioned to using apps like ArcGIS StoryMaps, ArcGIS Dashboards or Instant Apps like Atlas. The specific use case will drive picking the best option among the different apps available.
Another option is to use ArcGIS Insights. Its new "Report Builder" feature allows you to create complex and scrolling interactive reports with dozens of maps and charts, etc. I now design most of my demos and presentations in ArcGIS Insights. When I'm done, I just share the interactive workbook with the audience.
Or you can then export the interactive maps, charts, and whatever else from ArcGIS Insights as individual iFrames to embed in Story Maps or any slide-deck software that accepts iFrame (e.g.,
slides.com).
They want a map showing the desired data in their regular powerpoint presentation (that doesn't have anything to do with GIS). So I would probably have a hard time selling them a completely new program for their presentation
@LarsElmkr_Chwastek I have a similar issue in that I want to export data into a powerpoint slide automatically and make that available to non technical users to be able to edit and reformat data as required. I think we will need to look at building a custom tool that uses the powerpoint API to push data into a slide. The MS/esri integrations have so much potential if they were implemented correctly to align to actual business requirements.
OK sleuths, this one is for you. We are an organization that loves powerpoint, and no matter what dashboards we create, a powerpoint presentation is typically still needed. We need a way to consolidate our project status in one easy document or dashboard. Is there any way to create the either of the two solutions below without regular manual intervention? APIs and macros considered if you know of anything.
Any ideas? We ideally do not want to be in the business of opening 30+ project dashboards, screenshotting (is that a word?) each dashboard, sizing/editing it, and pasting that into PowerPoint, and managing that when there are regular changes. Yikes.
Is it possible to use the webpage link option in PPT and the embed link in a dashboard? I would think it would work since an entire dashboard can have an embed link created... without publishing the dashboard, or linking somehow via the web functions, I'm not sure... good luck!
This is a challenge we are facing as well. Looking for some automated way to integrate into Powerpoint. I did find a tool called Office Timeline but it is a Windows only option and I am a macbook user so I am still researching other options. Following this discussion to see what others may have to offer up.
I am a new user to Panopto. I am a university faculty member and am trying to record my lectures with my powerpoint slides. When I share the screen as per the instructions, the powerpoint slides do not work. I get a single screen that will not move to the next slide. I am trying to go through the powerpoint slides with my picture in the corner or, better yet, side by side the powerpoints. But the program does not seem to work as the instructions indicate it should.
I have tried the application window and chrome tab options. When I select the application window, Panopto goes to the application, but I am not in the window. It is just the powerpoint slides. When I go back to the browser with the camera, I see the powerpoint slide in but the powerpoint slides will not work.
If you have access to Panopto through your university, I would recommend recording with the Panopto desktop recorder instead of the new Panopto Capture web app. Here is the guide for that: -recording-1
This is how you would record when recording the whole screen. If you would like to record just the powerpoint application (not the whole screen), follow step 5.2 of this article: -to-Create-a-Video-Using-Panopto-Capture#hTargetInstance4
Kathryn, Thanks for your help. I thought that I had figured it out. In fact, I was able to record several videos exactly like I wanted. However, now I have run into a different problem. I cannot get Panopto to record the camera. I have been trying to record a side-by-side lecture using Google Slides using the free recorder available at
panopto.com (I have used the pro recorder as well and the same thing happens). I select the microphone, then the camera, then a select the google tab with the particular google slide show that I want to use. I have it set by side-by-by side presentation. I hit record and then go to the Chrome tab with the slide show. I record the lecture going through the slides. At the end, then I switch back to panopto and stop the recording. I upload it to my Pro folder and find that only the sound recorded. The camera is not recording my face. I have recorded the lecture at least 8 times trying to get the side-by-side presentation. I have switched computers, I have tried using picture in a picture. I have tried recording with just the slide show appearing. Nothing has worked. I cannot get panopto to record my face and the slides in the same presentation. Have you any advice on what I need to do to get this to work? I am at my wits end. I am using Panopto because it is the only software that I could find that would do side-by-side presentations. I was able to make several that worked just fine. Now I cannot get it to record using the camera. It seems that whenever I start recording, the camera is turned off. Help!
