The Department of Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is committed to producing the finest surgeons, using a dynamic didactic curriculum and a teaching philosophy rooted in mentorship. Our residents work as a team, employing the latest technology in surgical simulation and using web-based clinical modules that complement our robust skills laboratory.
Our residents are exposed to everything from general surgery to colon and rectal surgery, pediatric surgery, and plastic surgery, and from surgical intensive care medicine and surgical oncology to vascular surgery. Having contact and experience with such a wide variety of procedures enriches the educational experience and broadens the knowledge base of the surgeons we train.
Surgical interventions can protect human life, prevent disability, and improve the quality of day-to-day experiences. At Mount Sinai, we strive to provide the highest possible level of surgical care and to prepare our residents, fellows, and medical students to continue this legacy. We teach by case discussions and one-on-one mentoring. We also focus on research and regularly share our findings in peer-reviewed journals and at national symposia presentations.
We teach our students to provide compassionate and exceptional care that centers around our patients. To best meet patient needs, we are expanding our programs and facilities. We are growing our Melanoma Program and our Global Health Program. We are adding more minimally invasive operating rooms and state-of-the-art office suites. In addition, we are developing our Advisory Board and Friends of Surgery Group in order to build connections with our donors and contributors, which will help us serve our patients even better.
The Department of Surgery Research Program recently centralized efforts across all Mount Sinai Health System sites, resulting in more effective and efficient access to research resources and opportunities. The number of industry-sponsored trials, investigator-initiated grant applications, and associated funding opportunities has significantly increased as a result and continues to grow as our department expands. Our team remains committed to fostering opportunities for increased research initiatives.
The Surgical Oncology Service is composed of eight full time faculty members and is a key component of the Wake Forest University National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Annually, over 1,500 major operative procedures are performed and approximately 7,500 outpatient visits are seen in the surgical oncology clinics.

Edward A. Levine, MD, professor, surgery, and chief, surgical oncology service, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, discusses clinical and research expertise in Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC).
The clinical experience is diverse, extensive, and includes all aspects of cancer surgery. In addition to the faculty, the fellowship is supported by a dedicated Surgical Oncology service with general surgery residents of all levels, supported by advanced practitioners, nurses and research staff.
The overarching goal of the fellowship is the development of clinical and operative skills in surgical oncology, with emphasis on complex surgical procedures for the difficult problems seen in a tertiary referral center. In addition to training outstanding surgeons in the broad field of Surgical Oncology with the expertise to lead in the multidisciplinary care of the cancer patient.
After Vanessa Davis received a computerized tomography (CT) scan in the emergency room due to a kidney stone, an incidental finding was that her liver looked cirrhotic. Eight months later, a follow-up CT scan confirmed that Vanessa had appendix cancer. Read the full story.

Welcome to our Fellowship Programs. The University of Toronto has a legacy for being at the forefront of research, innovation, and education in the fields of transplantation and hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgery. Our respective programs are among the largest in North America based on clinical volumes, and we have a proud history of training many of the leaders in surgery over the last 38 years. We offer both an AHPBA-accredited HPB surgical oncology track and a combined ASTS-accredited abdominal transplantation surgery track.
We also offer a multitude of opportunities to participate in both clinical and basic science research with many of our investigators being world leaders in their respective fields. Background: Surgery, including lobectomy and segmentectomy, is the major curative intervention for lung cancer. Surgical planning for pulmonary surgery is difficult due to the high variation rate of pulmonary arteries and needs a fine-grained atlas as a reference. We conducted a study to create a surgically oriented atlas and analyzed the error encountered during the production.
Conclusion: Our research provided an atlas for lobectomy and segmentectomy at the subsegmental or more distal level. We demonstrated that the recognition accuracy of pulmonary arteries in a non-time-sensitive experimental scenario was still unfavorable. We also suggest that extra attention should be paid to certain surgeries during the surgical planning process.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is the federal government's principal agency for cancer research and training. Established under the National Cancer Institute Act of 1937, NCI is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), one of 11 agencies that make up the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
NCI was tasked with assisting and promoting cancer research at other public and private institutions, particularly by providing funding opportunities to support promising cancer research. The act established the National Advisory Cancer Council, now known as the National Cancer Advisory Board, which recommended approval of first award for fellowships in cancer research shortly thereafter.
Shortly thereafter, The National Science Foundation notified HHS that NCI-Frederick met the criteria for and was designated as a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC), a government-owned, contractor-operated facility designed to achieve long-term research and development needs that could not be met as effectively by existing in-house or contractor resources.
W. Kimryn Rathmell, M.D., Ph.D., M.M.H.C., was sworn in as the 17th NCI director on December 18, 2023. She previously led the Vanderbilt University Medical Center as physician-in-chief and chair of the Department of Medicine.
Dr. Rathmell earned undergraduate degrees in biology and chemistry from the University of Northern Iowa and her Ph.D. in biophysics and M.D. from Stanford University. She completed an internal medicine internship at the University of Chicago and an internal medicine residency, medical oncology fellowship, and postdoctoral studies at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2022, she completed her Master of Management in Health Care from the Vanderbilt University Owen Graduate School of Management.
