Whereas I needed a 3GB (!!?!@#!) Digital Ocean VPS (virtual private server) to run my website smoothly before, ghost seems to be running perfectly with 512MB. That's a very important decrease in resources my wallet will especially appreciate.
ghost doesn't have to be commandline-heavy, but it can be. this makes it a really nice choice over jekyll or even octopress - because I'm so used to entering blog posts via a web interface, I like the simplicity of it - but I also like having the commandline, as this has many many advantages for those who are commandline-savvy
when I first discovered ghost.org (at the time I believe it was ghost.io) it did not have enough 'features' (oh lol) to justify moving at the time, but the fact that there was a blogging platform being built on top of node.js was very exciting. I've been doing some poking around and looking at the Planned Features for ghost is really exciting. I'm hoping, nonetheless and perhaps despite that list I just linked to, that ghost will remain as lightweight as possible and that most functionality will be easily built through the "Apps" functionality they are building.
Is it possible to return the resurrection of a character after his death? A ghost, at the station, or behind the palladium, in the place where he was killed. As it was in the Global, it seems there are 3 options to choose from.
I just saw when recently playing on a game with mods, that when I died I didn't become a ghost or leave the server, I was just respawned somewhere else in the world. Does anyone know if there is a personal mod that allows this or if it's just a byproduct of another mod?
@Escaped, sounds like you were playing a wilderness server. That game mode allows you to choose a different character and spawns you in a random location in the world.
@Escaped, I don't know of any public mod which does this, I however, in the past have created a script to do it, so maybe they created a private server only mod which does the same thing as the script.
After around the first week of January, he could no longer connect to the Ghostbusters servers. He and I have not been able to play the game together for about a month now and there doesn't seem to be a good solution. First, it was recommended to factory reset the Quest 2. However, by doing this, he would lose all his other game saves/data since secondary accounts do not backup game data to the cloud. So this was not an option. Then, it was suggested that I disable and reenable app sharing. However, this would cause the same problem of losing all game saves/data since there is no cloud backup on his secondary account on our Quest 2. I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game and making sure the game and headset is up to date.
I'm not seeing any solution to allow him to play the game with me any longer. I understand some games are limited more than others for children under the age of 13, but this completely blocks him from enjoying the game that we were once able to play together. This is a game meant for team play and since he is unable to connect to the servers, he is not only unable to play with his friends, but also his own parent in the same household.
Is there any way to allow him to connect to the Ghostbusters servers again so he and I can play together? I can connect just fine on my adult account on my Quest 3, so it truly seems to be an issue related to his age. I've also asked for help from the developer, but have yet to receive any update.
Unfortunately not. The game was designed around teamwork and he can only play the game offline, which means he and I cannot even play together in the same home. In private messages, Meta said it may be due to recent updates and that the game is rated Teen. However, there doesn't seem to be a way for a parent to allow the game regardless if it's because of the teen rating or social restrictions that children 10-12 years of age have. The restrictions for this age range is becoming very frustrating with no way for parents to make choices for their children.
- In many games, he can't even setup private lobbies/rooms/servers, which depending on the game, either makes it impossible for us to play together in the same home or very challenging to join public lobbies together, especially when they have a maximum number of players.
As I'm moving all my online assets to a VPS (Virtual Private Server) I wanted to share my current setup. I also want to emphasise that I've been able to set this all up with decent technical knowledge and an understanding of how the internet works, but far from adept developer skills or any significant familiarity with running a server prior to this.
A server is a computer connected to a network that can "serve" content, often for the web. A website is always hosted on a server. It can be private in the sense that I as the owner and administrator do not share it with others. On a shared server (which is the most common way for small entitities to host a website on a web hotel) your assets, and availability, are more vulnerable. You have to abide by more rules, you do not have access to all the settings of the server and can not install what you want on it. The shared environment means security issues, limited resources and the fact that your website could slow down becuse there are other popular websites on the same server.
Virtual can feel like a peculiar concept for a lot of people. What it means in this case is that my computer (the server) is one of many on the same physical machine. It is still running its own operating system and is completely isolated from other virtual servers. Specific memory and computing power is dedicated for each virtual server and never shared. For all intents and purposes, it's a standalone machine. It just isn't physically a standalone machine. It virtually is.
To be clear: some people argue that it isn't really private when you actually have multiple tenants on one physical machine. There are of course single-tenant options available. Still, this is the naming standard in use, and VPS is considered the premium option to shared hosting, giving owners much more control at an affordable price. Dedicated (single-tenant) hosting would be a significant step up in price.
Specifications is about what your server has in terms of memory and computing power. This will depend on how you plan to use it, how much traffic you expect and how many applications you intend to host.
I can say up front that I am doing quite a lot with mine and I realised just after two weeks I had to upgrade from my original setup. And this is one of the benefits of a VPS. Since it is virtual, you can often upgrade it quickly and even without having to restart it. In my case I sent an email and an hour later my server had more memory.
What originally had me hesitant about even starting down this route is the fact that I really do not have the time and skills to regularly maintain, update and keep a server secure. Sure, my skills are good enough to get by and find my way through help documentation. But my fear was that I would soon realise I had bitten off more than I can chew. I can enjoy midnight problem solving as much as the next geek, but there certainly is a limit. Especially when all my online publications are affected.
Cloudron is a software solution that creates a user-friendly interface for your VPS. And it has production-ready packages of apps that can be installed with, essentially, one click. So a bit like an app store for your own server. With some more settings available.
Furthermore, Cloudron takes care of installing and running your own email service which can be a bit complex. Having a working one is really important for receiving messages from all your different installed applications. And potentially, if you also want to completely host your own email server.
I decided it's totally worth it. Cloudron is everything I ever wanted to control my own server and then some. Because truly what I'm personally really after, beyond the points I outlined at the start, is to spend more time writing and producing content rather than worrying about the tech.
As you will have realised, what I am self-hosting is probably a bit more than what an average blogger for example would want to host. I'd say that running one or two blogs you can easily do on the server specification I had at first.

We started playing Atlas a few weeks ago (there are 2 of us). We originally wanted to play on a dedicated private rented server and invite another friend or 2, but chose to play the single player on a non dedicated server (tethered) after reading that we'd have to rent several servers in order to get access to a large portion of the map on a private server. I'm still not sure we understand how the servers and maps work, and how many squares of the map you get per server that you rent. We just want to be able to enjoy all the content of the game with the boss fights, power stones, kraken , ghost ship, etc. .. and were afraid that we'd miss most of that if we only had a couple squares to work with. Can someone explain to me how many squares of the map you actually get per rented server? Also, if you only get a few squares to work with, does that mean you just never get to fight the bosses or see the content in the other squares you don't have access to?
Fast forward now we're almost 2 weeks into our fresh server and now last night it seems like the server broke on us again. There is no sense in continuing to play if we are going to just have to start over every 10 days or 2 weeks. I'm hoping someone can give me some insight into what we can do to fix this.
Most of the evening of us playing went fine, then all of the sudden I crashed and it said I lost my connection to the host. While trying to re-join it would not show our sever in the list, so the host had to reboot his game and then it would show for me. We've never had those issues before last night. After the 2 times of that happening, everything seemed to work fine. We were able to continue playing with no issues for a while. We decided to go do some ship exploration, get some resources, and then do a couple of treasure maps. For a while everything seemed normal, while sailing, with normal ship attacks, shipwrecks to dive, flotsam floating etc. During our exploration we found what we believe may be the Kraken location (we aren't positive on that) and went inside the swirling water (nothing happened when we did). That was in F4. Then we went over to G5 and hunted the ghost ship for a little while. We think we may have found it during the day, as our ship started having some weird ghosting effects. At that time we didn't realize the ship only appeared at night. We decided to go ahead and do some treasure maps. We were going to sail home to C9 to drop our resources off and lighten our ship, then head out. At some point during that journey we realized we hadn't seen a Ship of the Damned in quite a while. Then realized we hadn't seen any shipwrecks or flotsam. We decided to re-log in case that was the problem. After we did, the shipwrecks and flotsam all re-appeared, but we still didn't see any Ships of the Damned. We sailed the rest of the way home and never saw any. I picked 3 Journeyman maps in A9. The host picked up the maps and noticed they said the minimum gold awarded for them were 0, which was odd. He handed them over to me and each one said the minimum was around 15k. While that was strange, we decided to go ahead and sail out to do them. We sailed from C9 to A9 and still never saw any ships, but did see shipwrecks and flotsam. We got to the location and the beam didn't show up for the host. He handed the map over to me and the beam showed up just fine. I walked over to the beam expecting it to activate the spawn, but nothing happened. I took my shovel out and started to dig and it crashed the server. We both came back in and tried again and it crashed again as soon as I tried to dig. We came back in a 3rd time, and this time we decided to pick up more t-map bottles to see if they also said there was a minimum of 0 gold as the reward. The host tried to pick up 3 bottles, and although it showed him picking them up.. the bottles weren't showing in his inventory. I went and found a bottle to pick up and the same thing happened, it wasn't in my inventory. We ended up just logging out after that.
