Werecognize that all children are unique and we continually encourage our students to discover, develop, and be grateful for talents that God has given them. To nurture their potential, we provide a warm and loving environment to introduce kindergartners to outstanding scholastic and specialized programs, such as: art, music, computer, physical education, and more. We understand that children are multifaceted, and we strive to develop our students scholastically, emotionally and spiritually.
Sts. Joseph and John School is founded upon three fundamental principles of our educational mission: Values, Academic Excellence and Service. Our foundation fosters in the minds of our students a devotion to character, a passion for learning and a commitment to public service.
We are blessed to have such exceptional, dedicated, loving, and experienced teachers and aides in our kindergarten program. In each kindergarten classroom, a full time aide works cooperatively with the kindergarten teacher to help ensure academic excellence. We take pride that our kindergarten teachers and aides are experienced and that all of our teacher aides are certified educational aides.
Curriculum
Our kindergarten curriculum follows the Catholic education principle that we must foster growth of the whole child: intellectual, physical, psychological, social, moral and religious.
Special Programs
We go beyond the basics. Our kindergarteners are able to enhance their skills and knowledge through our special programs: music, art, physical education and computer education.
Lunch
Our nutritious hot lunch program, including milk, is available every day to our students. Children also have the option of bringing their own lunch and buying milk. The kindergarten students enjoy lunch in McGraw Hall.
After-School Care Program
A safe, teacher-operated after-school care program is offered to kindergarteners through 6th graders daily until 6:00 p.m. Children are given time for homework, free-play, computer learning games, and are provided a nutritious snack.
In our kindergarten program, we utilize methods of differentiated instruction to ensure growth and excellence for each student and to provide new experiences that engage blossoming readers, writers, scientists, mathematicians, musicians and artists.
The curriculum encompasses listening, speaking, viewing and preparation for reading, writing, and research activities. All five senses are incorporated into our language arts modalities: receptive and expressive language, fine and gross motor skills, visual skills, and auditory skills.
Mathematics is acquired through informal group activities and planned experiences that occur in games and discovery while working with manipulatives. Math skills are developed not only in math class, but also in all other subject areas throughout the day. Our objectives include: counting, recognizing and understanding the meaning of numbers from 1 to 20, graphing, the clock and calendar, money, measurement, sets, shapes, one to one correspondence, and addition and subtraction through ten.
Science surrounds us in real life and becomes an essential component of our everyday environment. Using our five senses, students learn to experience and explore their natural world through observation, experimentation and discovery. Topics covered include plants, animals, weather, and the seasons of the year.
Computer Lab is visited weekly and taught by a specialized teacher. The kindergarten computer curriculum focuses on becoming familiar with the keyboard and computer components. Educational computer games are used to reinforce various areas of skill development across the entire kindergarten curriculum.
Physical Education is taught by a specialized teacher weekly in our gymnasium. Our program allows kindergarten students to progress at their own rate in developing physical gross motor skills. Students enjoy a variety of games and activities to increase their development of their gross motor skills.
Music provides our students with an opportunity to sing, dance, and perform using rhythm band instruments and to respond creatively using body movements. A specialized music teacher visits the kindergarten classroom weekly.
Art is an opportunity for our students to express themselves creatively through painting, drawing and constructing. Students use color, line, and form to communicate ideas and feelings. The students visit a specialized art teacher in our art classroom weekly.
Kindergarteners follow the school dress code. Girls wear a plaid jumper and white polo. Boys wear navy pants and white or pastel blue polo. Kindergarteners wear tennis or leather dress shoes. Gym uniforms are also now required for Kindergartners. The gym uniform is purchased through the Book Store and includes t-shirt, shorts and 2 options for pants. Tennis shoes must be worn with gym uniforms.

St Joseph's offers a full Kindergarten program run by a qualified teacher during term time. Outside these hours, we offer before, after and vacation care. The ideals of a holistic education are epitomised within our centre by providing each child with the opportunity to engage in a multifaceted educational journey.
At St Joseph's Kindergarten, we value the worth of each individual learner and recognise that each child is on their own journey and that it is our roles as Educators to facilitate this through a broad-based program.
I was drawn after experiencing the classroom and loving how it was child-directed. I firmly believe that a great kindergarten year sets a strong foundation for children to excel in their future schooling years.
Over the years I have experienced a great sense of excitement starting every day at the centres I have worked at, or led, about what lay ahead for that day. It is hard not to be passionate about early childhood education, when this is the start of each day.
MMCNQ acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the lands on which our services operate. We pay respect to the Elders - past, present, and emerging- and commit to increasing our awareness and sensitivity to the 'first peoples' who lived on these lands.

We would like to congratulate our students on completing another successful school year, and wish our outgoing 5th graders the best in their future endeavors and academic pursuits. We are very proud of our students. I also want to share my appreciation for all of the hard work, dedication and perseverance that our teachers and staff consistently demonstrate to the children we serve. We accomplished a lot this year and will continue to build on the strength of our community. It truly is special to attend a neighborhood school where your classmates are your neighbors, and families come together to build a community within the school as well as the larger surrounding community. A special thank you to families, who continue to support our school at home, and through communication and volunteering with the school.
The academic calendar for the 2024-25 year is out and posted on the district website. The first day of school for our 1st- 5th grade students will be Tuesday, August 27th. Parents should expect to receive a welcome back letter from the school in mid August with preliminary class placements and back to school information.
Kindergarten will have a ramp-up schedule to help with the transition to school during the last week of August; this schedule will be mailed to families in August. The first full day for all kindergarten students is Tuesday, September 3rd.
I also want to remind parents of the big shift in the student day. Next year, the student day will begin at 8:00 am, with the doors opening at 7:55. Breakfast will be provided in the cafeteria beginning at 7:45. Due to the change in start time, we will no longer have morning supervision on the playground and ask that parents supervise students before school. Students not with an adult will be asked to go to the cafeteria where they can be supervised.
We will continue to be a CEP school, which means breakfast and lunch will continue to be free for all students. There are still a number of moving parts when it comes to staffing, as we are impacted by layoffs and seniority across the district. I will be able to tell you more in August.
Which is something the McDaniel High School junior has done quite a bit of lately. Not only is he a member of the prestigious Portland Youth Philharmonic (PYP) and the PYP conservatory orchestra, but he recently earned first prize in the tuba solo performance category at the Oregon State Solo Music Championships.
A little over 30 years ago, a Madison High School student named Joseph Janson had a simple wish. He wanted to go to a dance. But nothing was simple for Joseph, who was born with Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy and was confined to a wheelchair.
Our three-year-old program focuses on social interaction through group related activities. Each month we work on a theme and incorporate our activities, art, and circle time around that theme. The journey into literacy begins through storytelling. Children are introduced to concepts of letters, numbers, shapes, and colors. They work on fine motor skills, such as cutting and coloring, and use different art techniques. Music, story time, and free play also play an important role in every school day. Each child enrolled must be three years old by October 1st of current school year.
For the four-year-olds, an emphasis is placed on kindergarten readiness. This program features a new letter of the alphabet each week. Our objective is for children to understand that each letter of the alphabet makes a different sound and when you put the letters together they form words. Children learn to recognize the letters and the sound that each represents. Science and math concepts are explored through hands-on activities. Music, art, and physical activity help to develop an early love of learning. Each child enrolled must be four years old by October 1st of current school year.
