Join us for one of two relaxed and dynamic afternoons in which the In Your Shoes team will lead you through a deeper dive into our process, and share opportunities for future increased involvement with our programs, including opportunities to bring In Your Shoes into your own contexts or to train to facilitate In Your Shoes yourself.

When I started hiking and backpacking I thought I would get blisters with wet feet. It took me several years to figure out that merino socks and meshy trail runners will dry out very quickly. I agree that people make too big a deal about wet shoes but I totally get the fear of blisters.

Decades of marketing telling us that waterproof shoes are the way to go, combined with spending most of our lives trying to keep our clothes dry while at work/school/etc are very difficult things to let go of.

one such guy, a hard as nails old liner from Maine, of French Canadian stock, who to this day, even with trail running shoes, takes them off and wades the rockiest of streams. That would destroy many pairs of feet, but then his feet are as tough as the rest of him,

Two thoughts about that:
* We lost one well-known walker when her foot jammed between two rocks in a river (she slipped on the rock) and she could not get her foot unjammed. She drowned. With shoes you could at least cut the laces.
* I want to see him do that in snow melt. Your feet are instantly numb, you lose all proprioception, and you can easily damage your feet. Bruising or ripping skin off. Now walk like that.

For the next two weeks, I scraped by until I had enough money to go back for my shoes. Funny how I kept calling them mine, as if somehow I could protect them from going home with anyone else. The day I had enough money, I ran all the way to the mall, and ignored all those people staring at my masking tape shoes. I went to the shelf where I left them, with my eyes half shut afraid to look. Sure enough they were gone. I looked at every pair of shoes in the aisle that had my size, but there were no shoes left like them. They were gone.

Most professional shoe repair shops or cobblers provide stretching services. They have machines and training to alter shoes. Not only can a cobbler stretch your shoes, they can repair and refresh the ones you have to make them last longer overall.

If your toes are bunched together in your shoes, the shoes are too tight. In addition to stretching your footwear, you need to help your toes to get back to their natural state of separation. Here are some things you can do:

Go shoe shopping in the afternoon - did you know that your feet swell throughout the day? Later in the day, your feet tend to be at their largest, so the afternoon is the best time to try on a new pair of shoes.

\"That means that your child can possibly be exposed to every single bacteria that you picked up on your shoe [...] all the bacteria from the park, the store, everywhere you went that day,\" Sexton said.

As with most models we tried, each Diamond Grip is attached to a rubber harness that slips on over the outside of your shoe, so these cleats should work with any shoe you have, and you can remove them at the door before you enter a house or store.

Removable traction aids are meant to slip on and off your shoes as needed. They all have some sort of flexible harness that stretches to fit over your shoe and then contracts to hold the actual traction devices, which may be steel or aluminum spikes, coils, or chains, in place on the underside of your shoe.

The Yaktrax Pro traction aid uses steel coils wrapped around the part of the rubber harness that sits underneath the sole of your foot. We found that these cleats worked well on semi-hard snow and on soft or rough ice. However, they still slipped easily on hard ice with even the slightest hint of an incline or decline.

Beyond the occasional stubbed toe, from an environmental health standpoint there aren't many downsides to having a shoe-free house. Leaving your shoes at the entry mat also leaves potentially harmful pathogens there as well.

After a big fashion show there's always the question of which trends will make the leap from the runway to real life. And after Paris Men's Fashion Week, at least one question remains: Do shoes need their own pair of shoes?

"I think they're going to be really popular," Wittich says. "I mean, you know, the streets are quite dirty and people want to protect their shoes, especially if they're paying a lot of money for them."

For a full in-depth guide on how to shine your shoes, you can revisit our interview with Gou Ishimi and Naoki Terashima, winners of two Japanese shoeshine competitions. The Hanger Project also once published a video on their technique, and I once gave five tips for a better shoeshine. Of course, Jesse also showed his routine in our webisode on shoes.

Using a dauber, spread a small amount of cream polish on your shoes and then brush them out with a large horsehair brush. Do this until you see a light shine. On very casual shoes, such as penny loafers, you may want to stop here. Sometimes very casual shoes benefit from only have a very light shine, instead of something glossier.
