Hi everyone,

I am pleased to announce the official release of NinerPad 1.1R1
Freeware Edition, available from www.ninermedia.com.

This release includes:

- NEW: set default note background color via preferences
- NEW: request confirmation before clearing a note (Note > Clear) or
deleting it (Note > Delete)
- NEW: "Space > Open Containing Folder" menu item, with shortcut "O"
- NEW: reminder-tagging a note clears matching tags if any were
already set for that note; speeds up recurring action editing
- NEW: "Space > Invert" menu item, with shortcut "V", for inversion of
current note space
- NEW: added search clauses to the Find Notes form for finding notes
that have reminder actions and alarms
- IMPROVED: some keyboard shortcut changes made, with closer mapping
between menu name and matching key
- IMPROVED: workspace size and current position indicator
- IMPROVED: built-in help documentation
- FIXED: Pencil: changing pencil color resets tip size to 2 (Dan)
- FIXED: cannot launch ninerpad if the host PDA is not already set to
8 bit screen depth, when it does in fact support that screen mode
- FIXED: deleting a favorite folder does not remove its name from the
favorites list, setting the conditions for later db corruption
- FIXED: cannot delete a folder if it contains one or more sub-folders
- FIXED: unable to "Find Notes" when tags database is empty

Warning: if you are a registered user of NinerPad, please wait for an
automatically generated email that shall be sent to you shortly and
that will provide you with the download coordinates for the full
version of NinerPad (the one with the bonus features included).

Thanks again to everyone for your help and suggestions and see you
soon for the next release.

Sincerely
Alex

Love being able to set the canvas color! - Can you make the eraser so
it can change sizes? It's hard to use the big eraser when you have a
tiny error, whether for art or a written note (I used this for my
shopping lists).

Looking forward to working more with it - and thanks again!!

Hi Thea,

Eraser size control added to the queue (not sure it will make it for
the next release, 2 weeks from now, though).

Cheers

Is the procedure still the same, uninstall the previous version, and then install the new version. And is the registration key the same to unlock.

Sorry to be so basic, and grateful for your work. I hope it has been profitable for you.

To install the new version, just move that new .prc file over to the
Palm and you are done.

In fact, no need to uninstall previous versions, ever. Just install a
new one and it will replace its predecessor. The databases (containing
the stuff you drew, filed, and tagged) will remain intact, and neither
will you need to re-register or re-enter your permanent reg code. It's
already on your Palm and it will stay.

Cheers
Alex

PS: profitability notwithstanding, there's always experience and
karma. Plus... Got my rice. Got my chopsticks. Got my weekly Big Mac.
So I'm not worried, yet. :)

Here I go again.

Seriously, We are beginning to have more and more Doctors visits (my parents are 86) so this has been a great program for keeping track and doodling in spare time. I only get out of the program for finances and reading books. You can't add those features can you? Ha Ha.

Have a restful night (Day time there I bet).

This has been a great group

Thea,

Have you seen what the BG Colors do to your old drawings. Interesting effects. You can keep changing BG Colors until you like what you see.

Wow I Like that.

Note: When you export, It does not export the color BG. This gives you the versatility to change the BG even more.

Its brilliant.

Dammit I had forgotten about that. Good catch, Dan. Okay I'll queue a
GIF export form checkbox for that option (keep BG color or not).

I don't know...is that important?
A person could draw solid shapes behind the drawing, that comes through the neg spaces.
I guess we'll see what the other folks think.

My message two back was jokingly implying... your going to have everything plus the kitchen sink in this thing.

But to be able to change the BG Color is great.

I think the "apply BG color on GIF" option will be a useful one because it will help satisfy 2 crowds:

1. (option OFF) those who will, back at the desktop, want to overlay the GIFs over their own (GTD) template
2. (option ON) those who won't

At first export, the option will be ON (what you see is what you export).

Now, for the kitchen sink... Dan? Good night. :)

Oh, no rush - it just seems logical - it also lets you go in and use
the eraser as background color to do a nice etching effect working
back over the original.

I second your comment that this has been a great group. I have enjoyed
it a lot more than some other groups I am on that are supposed to be
focussed special interest groups. It's been fun to be of some
assistance and having someone like Alex to try to help makes it good,
too. I have enjoyed it very much and hope Alex just keeps doing more
with his software so we can all keep on hanging out together!!

Oh, interesting - it retains that transparency - for me, that's not a
problem. As you say, you could do things like put a gradient behind
it, or a color outside the 256 color range or you name it.

Fun!

(long technical post alert)

Oh, about those BG colors.

ninerpad works in 8 bit screen depth mode. This means that you only
have 256 colors to play with, upside being that the drawings take a
lot less room to store, and can thus be commensurately larger or
numerous. Good for note taking, that.

Now, to store a drawing, I need to give every pixel a value. I mean,
there is no such thing as a non-value. So, by default, I fill blank
drawing data with zeroes, one for each pixel (compressed data
actually, hence fewer bits, but that discussion is for later).

And therein it lies. Zero happens to be the only index for the color
"white" in the Palm system palette. No other color well in that
palette gives us that.

So, if I want to let you guys draw in white over, say red, I have a
problem. I can let you draw in color zero (white) over red, sure, but
what about those other empty pixels then, those that you did not draw
over and yet that need a storage value?

The answer lies at the bottom of the BG color selector (inside
Preferences). You will notice that one of the color wells down there
is also set to white. That well, in addition to well zero (the one at
top left), is a cheat. I reconfigured color well 254 -- black, by
default -- to hold white.

Now, when you draw in white, you are actually setting those pixels you
draw over to hold color index 254, rather than their default color
index 0. When I read back the data, I overlay non-zero-index data over
the BG color and presto, you can now even draw in white over a white
background, if that strikes you as shiny. The drawn data will still be
there.

The reason for this long post is that I want to warn you that
somewhere, a bug may lie in ambush, waiting for that right moment.
When it does, it will likely appear as some kind of display glitch,
i.e., something that should have appeared in black but that is now in
white.

ninerpad restores the system palette to its default values when it
exits, so other apps are safe. But if some 3rd party application pops
something up over ninerpad while the later is active, the bug may show
its ugly (white) head. If and when it does, let me know.

And what can I do to help test this out for you?

Nothing to test for now. But do be on the lookout for ninerpad display
glitches and let me know if and when.
