Thus far, Mike and Dan have reported this problem: hotsync crashes
their PDAs and ninerpad 1.1R3 seems to be involved (or guilty; not
sure yet).

If any of you have experienced such a problem, please post to this
topic.

In the meantime, I am working with them to try and trace the problem.
More news in short order.

Thanks
Alex

Alex,

I'm getting a Hotsynch crash at the following spot

Backing up NinerPadNodeDB to C:\Program Files\Palm\FralicC\Backup
\NinerPadNodeDB.PDB

I removed NPad completely and I don't crash now. I am going to go back
and try r3.

I (Engineer's Son) also wonder if you uninstall 1R3 first and then install (1.r4) if it will crash at hotsync.
Although everything backed up and functioned properly after crashing, (My belief).

Oh since I conducted Alex's little experiment, I think I am still using 1.1R3, and still crashes.

Good Experiment when I am more lucid in the morning.

Hi Clark,

Were you running R4 with legacy (pre R4) data or from anew? I wish I
could see a pattern to this problem. I just can't reproduce it here,
even in situ (on my E2).

Thanks

Well, it sounded like a good thing at the time. I did uninstall Ninerpad and re-load 1.1R4 and right at the same place Ninerpad Database it crashed. He said sadly. But R4 is working perfectly.

I still very much depend on NP
I do export regulary.

Dan

I am not sure it does any good to back-up in hotsync the NP files.
what can you do with them? Can you re-load them?

Hi Dan

You mean, the device crashes if you restore the backed-up dbs to the
Palm, right? And if you run a fresh new R4 however, no problems. Let
me know if I am wrong.

Hotsync support is very important. Without it, you would have no data
to restore after a hard reset. That's why I cannot consider this
complete and well done if I don't have a solution to this problem. Am
working hard at it... though not much so in the past couple of days. I
am leaving for France on Saturday and will be back 2 weeks later. Not
much work will be done while I am away, but I'll try my best.

Alex,

I am not sure of your language, so I will kindergarten it.
A long time back I purchased an uninstaller, So I removed NP completely but not the notes, or files were protected. Then I dragged your file of 1.1R4 to send to handheld and hotsynced. If thats restoring back-up, yes.

I just looked at Hotsync conduit settings, and it showed me what had been backed-up on the palm. The only thing I don't see is the Ereader for my books. I'm not sure it does anything with that program. I also don't see NP

I know that the sync process is important, but my palm, she is HOT and I don't think she will let me down!@#$%^&

You need a vacation, you look terrible.

On closer look at the conduit setting, or conduit manager. I did not do this the way you explained. I used Neatfreak Uninstaller and installed NP R4 the normal way (send to hand held).

Alex,

I believe that is correct. I installed v4 ontop of my old version. The
program worked fine then, but started crashing at hot synch. Today I
uninstalled everything and reinstalled v4. My TX crashed on the
spaceDB. Is there any preferences I should delete from saved or
unsaved prefs?

Hi Clark

If I understand correctly:
1. you deleted all niner dbs from your PDA and installed a fresh new
R4
2. you launched ninerpad, used it for a while
3. you exited ninerpad, then triggered a hotsync
4. the device crashed and the last hotsync log entry mentionned
NinerSpaceDb

Did you at any time during #2 delete notes or spaces?

Thanks
Alex

PS: one of the app preference slots stores the current space ID.
Deleting prefs would only reset that id to the home space. Since you
had reset NinerPad, this should not be a problem.

I went back to double check my device and found that Uninstall missed
some of the DBs. I deleted them and re-installed v4. It did not reset.
Now I will start the process of creating folders renaming etc. to see
if I can find what happened.

Thanks Clark. This could be related to nodes (move note origin), notes
(add and delete), and spaces (make new space, delete it), judging from
your email and Dan's and Mike's.

Alex,
I just turned on my device , loaded npad and the debug screen popped
up with a db problem. something about an invalid query. I notice that
the home space (which i renamed Inbox) reverted back to HOME but has
jibberish before the name and I cant open any folders. Locked up. Had
to reset. Hot synch reset when it tried to backup the QueryDB

Clark,

And this was on your 2-hour old new fresh start of R4?

Besides renaming HOME to Inbox, did you by any chance save a query or
a folder to favorites? What about spaces?

In any case, that helps a lot, though my E2 has yet to complain. Let
me rename some folders and see what's what.

Alex,

This was on a clean install with only one note in the HOME space. I
had not yet created any subfolders or run any queries. I had to hard
reset in order to get my TX to run. That's why I asked about the
prefs? There is something goofy going on. Any ideas would be
appreciated.

Hi Clark

Well, the prefs are unsaved, with creator ID 'NnrP'. The only
preference slot that has any connection to the databases is the one
that stores the record ID of your last accessed ninerpad workspace. If
you only had one space, the ID should be 0 and there should be no
issues with prefs.

But, in case they somehow got corrupted, try and delete them (via
FileZ or other utilities) and see what happens after a hotsync.

I'll install Uninstall Manager on my E2 and run some tests with
ninerpad and hotsyncs. I don't see how UM could be connected to this
problem but it's worth a try anyway.

Thanks
Alex

Hi Alex

Nope! In fact I almost always use SMB Mate to copy from my PC on to the SD card and then install it manually from there.

It sounds like it could be one of the fixes you introduced in one of the 1.1 releases caused the problem. Maybe give the R4 some more extensive testing to see how people get on.....

Alex,

I don't think that Uninstall had a problem. I just mentioned that when
I used it to uninstall Npad it didn't take the Dbs with it. I am
reinstalling v4 to play with.

I've checked and rechecked the prefs-specific code and don't see
anything that would cause this. And my E2 is still happy with
ninerpad. Still, I will add a preferences dump utility to the Tools >
Admin form (coming for 1.1R5).

In the meantime, thanks for your perseverance. Let me know when this
happens again and I will prepare a special debug version.

Also, I will be "off the air" for the next 30 hours; I'm heading out
to France for 2 weeks for work and rec. But I will follow up on this
by Sunday.

Alex et al.

Just wanted to let you know that I have seen a couple of hotsync
backup problems on my T3 setup.

Nothing major, however. The upgrade went fine and has allowed me to
hotsync for a while, but I noticed one hotsync did not complete, so I
retried and it stopped while backing up the 9pad dbs. I just
restarted the hotsync app on my system and all was back to normal, but
it does seem that any problem is in the hotsync process.

That said, I would be check any 3rd party palm backup utils to ensure
that all DBs and prefs are suitably checked as either backup or do not
backup. If there is a mix, you may end up with a mix of versions.
Looking at the resco guide, it is possible to restore the databases
but not the preferences - http://www.resco.net/Palm/Backup/guide.asp
- which could lead to problems.

I have not had any Palm reset as a result of preference/backup
problems, but thought that the more info Alex has to work with the
better his return from France will be.

Hi Roger

Still in France, drinking, eating, breathing more oxygen (in the Alps
right now) than I have in the past few months. I'll be back at my desk
as of Sunday the 26th, at which point I can resume debugging this
issue.

Mike sent me his (hotsync problem-triggering) dbs and I have not
tested them yet. I'll follow up on that issue in a separate thread.

Do I understand correctly that a full hotsync was successful once you
had relaunched the hotsync manager app on your PC? Am I correct? This
could indicate that I may have left some records locked upon ninerpad
exit, and that only a device reset would close them... Let me run more
tests (few on the road, but definitely the full armada as of next
week).

Thanks for the hint
Alex

If you restart the hotsync manager on your PC and try to hotsync
again, does it still trigger a PDA reset?

Thanks

It doesn't matter. I removed Npad and ran my device fine for three
days with out a reset. Installed Npad and it works fine until I do a
backup. Then everything goes haywire. When I remove Npad, the backups
work fine.

Alex,

I think you got the gist of what I was saying. I have not had a palm
crash at all on my system, but the hotsync process did bomb out a
couple of times and that was while it was backing up Npad databases.

I got around this fine by restarting the hotsync process on the
computer and restarting the hotsync too, without anything in between
(other than checking hotsync logs) so Npad was not invoked in the
interval between hotsync restarts.

The message was just a hint as you surmised, as it might help you
think round the box on this perplexing problem.

Get your jetlag over before touching any more code - the memory of
french food and drink will last for a long while.
