The community edition (CE) of DBeaver is a free and open source software that is distributed under the Apache License. A closed-source enterprise edition of DBeaver is distributed under a commercial license.

DBeaver 3.x announced support of NoSQL databases (Cassandra and MongoDB in the initial version). Since then DBeaver was divided on Community and Enterprise editions.Enterprise Edition has support of NoSQL databases, persistent query manager and a few other enterprise-level features. The EE version is not open-source and requires the purchase of a license (a trial license can be generated free of charge).List of additional features:

E-SPIN has been actively promoting DBeaver full range of products and technologies as part of the company Database Management Portfolio (from database platform management, performance monitoring, risk management, security monitoring to protection). E-SPIN is active in consulting, supplying, training and maintaining DBeaver products for the enterprise, government and military customers (or distribute and resell as part of the complete package) on the region E-SPIN do businesses. The enterprise ranges from corporate, universities, government agencies, medium to large corporations to IT service providers on data center, enterprise application management /operations.

PostgreSQL, also known as Postgres, is the most popular and advanced enterprise-grade open-source relational database software. It's a widely-used version of SQL. Without some form of editor or graphical user interface (GUI), the default means of interacting with PostgreSQL is through running SQL queries.

DBeaver comes with a community edition which is free to use as well as with an enterprise edition that supports NoSQL Databases. We will be using its latest available community edition on a Linux CentOS 7 Desktop and LinuxMint Desktop.

In case you have multiple databases and high workloads that may impact the performance of dbeaver. In that case you can also tweak its JVM parameters by editing the file below with its XMS and XMX values.

While the open source CE version has plenty of features, it lacks some elements that make more sense in a data-intensive enterprise. For starters, the Mock Data generator is a very useful feature for populating a newly created database with thousands of rows of sample data. If you have a large database and complex relationships between the tables, you can use the Visual Query Builder tool, which is designed to aid even non-SQL users by helping them query the database without writing a single line of SQL.

In today's digital era, data is a crucial asset for businesses. To effectively manage and utilize data, companies rely on data engineers. Data engineering involves the design, construction, and maintenance of data architectures and systems. To simplify database management tasks, data engineers often use specialized tools. One such tool is dbeaver, a popular GUI (graphical user interface) tool for connecting and administering database servers. In this article, we will explore the features and use cases of dbeaver for data engineers, compare it with other similar tools, and discuss its enterprise edition and the introduction of dbeaver Cloud.

Before delving into the details of dbeaver, it is essential to understand the role of data engineering. Data engineers play a crucial role in ensuring the availability, accessibility, and reliability of data for data-driven decision-making. They are responsible for designing and constructing robust data pipelines, optimizing database performance, and ensuring data security. With the exponential growth of data, the importance of effective data engineering has become paramount.

dbeaver is a versatile GUI tool that enables data engineers to connect to and administer different types of database servers. It supports various SQL databases, including MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and more. With both a community version and an enterprise edition, dbeaver provides a range of features to simplify database management tasks for data engineers.

dbeaver allows data engineers to execute SQL queries directly from its user-friendly interface. It provides syntax highlighting and auto-completion, making it easier to write complex queries efficiently.

With dbeaver, data engineers can browse and edit data within databases. It provides a convenient way to view and modify data in tables and offers advanced search and filtering options for handling large datasets.

dbeaver enables users to explore the structure and metadata of databases. It allows users to view tables, columns, indexes, and foreign keys. It also generates entity relationship diagrams automatically, providing a visual representation of database relationships.

Data engineers can import data into databases using dbeaver. It supports various file formats such as CSV, HTML, XML, JSON, XLS, and XLSX, allowing seamless data transfer. Similarly, data can be exported in different formats for external use.

dbeaver offers SSH tunneling capabilities, enabling secure data movement between networks. It also provides SSL support for MySQL and PostgreSQL, ensuring encrypted communication between the client and the database server.

The enterprise edition of dbeaver includes a feature for generating mock data. This functionality is useful for testing purposes, allowing data engineers to populate databases with realistic simulated data.

One of the primary use cases of dbeaver is visualizing the database schema. Its entity relationship Diagram feature helps data engineers understand the connections between tables, making it easier to write complex join queries and perform database analysis.

dbeaver excels in scenarios where a data engineer needs to work with multiple types of SQL databases. Its ability to connect and administer various databases, including MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Oracle, makes it a suitable choice for companies managing diverse data environments.

Heidi SQL is an open-source tool primarily designed for MySQL and Microsoft SQL databases. While it offers a range of features for managing these databases, its support for other types of databases is more limited compared to dbeaver.

dbeaver also offers an enterprise edition with additional features and use cases. Some of these additional features include advanced schema comparison, table data comparison, and server health monitoring. The enterprise edition provides enhanced support for big data platforms and NoSQL databases, such as Cassandra and Redis. Pricing and licensing details can be found on the dbeaver website.

dbeaver Cloud is a web-based database management system offered by dbeaver. It provides access to dbeaver's powerful features through a web interface. With dbeaver Cloud, data engineers can connect to databases running on Docker containers, making it easier to manage environments and collaborate with team members. The cloud version also supports NoSQL databases and allows for the generation of mock data for testing purposes.

dbeaver is a versatile and powerful GUI tool for data engineers. Its extensive features, including SQL query execution, data browsing and editing, and database structure visualization, make it an essential tool for efficient database management. With its support for various SQL databases and the introduction of dbeaver Cloud, data engineers can streamline their workflow and enhance productivity. Whether working with multiple databases or needing a visual representation of database schemas, dbeaver proves to be a valuable asset in the data engineering toolkit.

macOS: Use Homebrew to run brew install --cask dbeaver-community, or use MacPorts to run sudo port install dbeaver-community. A macOS installer is also available from the Download page on the DBeaver website.
