in the last few months my audio in clips has been really compressed and bad to listen to. i have a pretty high end computer, so processing power shouldn't be the issue. both my and my friends' (on discord) voices are warped/compressed.
However, should I expect this result to be different for super-compressed liquified gas? Is it possible that, say, $0.05$kg of super super super compressed gas, could expand very rapidly over a wide surface area of someone's arm and chill the entire arm by $10$ degrees?
If you took the 10 g of hydrogen and burned it, or compressed it till it was so hot it fused to helium, and then used that energy to power a cooling cycle that was put to work on your arm, you could do it. So in a sense it's possible.
So I had this idea for an FTL drive that would work by creating a rift (a black hole before it tugs on space enough to become unstable and deadly) via an unbelievably strong magnetic field. I know that atoms are mostly empty space anyway, and they can be compressed to smaller sizes with a big enough applied force. But could a magnetic field actually produce a force capable of squishing a matter (probably plasma) down to the point where it would become a black hole?
Because I do not fully understand how compression works @ it's core, I have (possibly ridiculous) concerns that sending a pre-compressed .tar to gzip might prevent gzip from compressing as well as it's potential would allow and things of that nature.
I am having difficulties formatting the reference style in a template. I have added \PassOptionsToPackagesquare,comma,numbers,sort&compress,supernatbib to force compressed reference style to my document, however it is not giving me the desired result. Rather than formatting the references as [1-5] it is formatting them as [1,2,3,4,5]. I have attached a screenshot for reference. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks
Finally, run zipmix on the collection of archives. Since different zip tools are better on different files, zipmix picks the best compressed version of each file from each of the archives and produces an output which is smaller than any that any of the zip tools could have produced individually.
You should note however that this is not guaranteed to work any kind of magic on your files. Certain types of data simply do not compress very well, like JPEGs and MP3s. These files are already compressed internally.
When I create PNG files with very small disk size, I tend to wonder if the file size becomes less important than the time viewers would need to decompress the image. Technically that would be trivial too, but I've wondered about it for a long time. We all know that more-compressed PNG images take longer to compress, but do they take longer to decompress?
I then wrote a script to convert the image from png to tif (on the assumption that TIF is a relatively uncompressed file format so quite fast) 200 times and timed the output.In each case I ran the script quickly and aborted it after a few seconds so any system caching could come into effect before running the full test, thus reducing the impact of disk io (and my computer happens to use SSD which also minimizes that impact. The results were as follows:
But, this does not take into account the time taken to download the file. This will, of-course, depend on the speed of your connection, the distance to the server and the size of the file. If it takes more then about 0.5 seconds more to transmit the large file then the small file, then (on my system - which is an older ultrabook, so quite slow thus giving a conservative scenatio), it is better to send the more highly compressed file. In this case - this means sending 5.8 megabytes a second, which equates to - very roughly, 60 megabits per second - excluding latency issues.
Conclusion for large files - if you are on a lightly used LAN it is probably quicker to use the less compressed image, but once you hit the wider Internet using the more highly compressed file is better.
Technically speaking you're right about the fraction of the milliseconds performance improvement you'd get to bask in for not having to decompress a lossless format like png, it's just that fraction isn't likely to do you a whole lot of good because you're not going to be able to do anything with the time you saved. Jpg is only useful because it can still retain 90% of its quality at 64 pixels even though it sheds itself down to a small fraction of its original detail it's just too small to notice. PNG is nearly as expedient while its quality as a lossless format doesn't suffer at all, making it the far superior choice IMO.

Suppose that I have some substance with a critical temperature of 20C. That means above that temperature, the substance exists neither as a gas nor a liquid, but instead as a super-critical fluid. Does it mean that no matter how high a pressure I apply on the fluid, it is not going to turn into a liquid above 20C? Why is that so?
What is the role of intermolecular forces? They are part of the explanation why at lower temperatures, gases condense into liquids. It seems that we are ignoring them in the case of super-critical fluids. Are we now saying I just need to apply pressure to decrease the distance between particles? If it weren't for intermolecular forces, I would have to apply much higher pressure to turn a gas into a liquid (at temperatures below the critical temperature).
So what happens when a super-critical fluid is compressed, and how is the interplay of particle speed, intermolecular forces and distance of particles different below and above the critical temperature?
The single-pixel imaging technique uses multiple patterns to modulate the entire scene and then reconstructs a two-dimensional (2-D) image from the single-pixel measurements. Inspired by the statistical redundancy of natural images that distinct regions of an image contain similar information, we report a highly compressed single-pixel imaging technique with a decreased sampling ratio. This technique superimposes an occluded mask onto modulation patterns, realizing that only the unmasked region of the scene is modulated and acquired. In this way, we can effectively decrease 75% modulation patterns experimentally. To reconstruct the entire image, we designed a highly sparse input and extrapolation network consisting of two modules: the first module reconstructs the unmasked region from one-dimensional (1-D) measurements, and the second module recovers the entire scene image by extrapolation from the neighboring unmasked region. Simulation and experimental results validate that sampling 25% of the region is enough to reconstruct the whole scene. Our technique exhibits significant improvements in peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of 1.5 dB and structural similarity index measure (SSIM) of 0.2 when compared with conventional methods at the same sampling ratios. The proposed technique can be widely applied in various resource-limited platforms and occluded scene imaging.
Understanding the high-pressure kinetics associated with the formation of methane hydrates is critical to the practical use of the most abundant energy resource on earth. In this study, we have studied, for the first time, the compression rate dependence on the formation of methane hydrates under pressures, using dynamic-Diamond Anvil Cell (d-DAC) coupled with a high-speed microphotography and a confocal micro-Raman spectroscopy. The time-resolved optical images and Raman spectra indicate that the pressure-induced formation of methane hydrate depends on the compression rate and the peak pressure. At the compression rate of around 5 to 10 GPa/s, methane hydrate phase II (MH-II) forms from super-compressed water within the stability field of ice VI between 0.9 GPa and 2.0 GPa. This is due to a relatively slow rate of the hydrate formation below 0.9 GPa and a relatively fast rate of the water solidification above 2.0 GPa. The fact that methane hydrate forms from super-compressed water underscores a diffusion-controlled growth, which accelerates with pressure because of the enhanced miscibility between methane and super-compressed water.
To review, I began (above) with the 2021-01-01 fileset on HIST_ARCHIVE. I used Borg to back up that fileset in a first archive consisting of Borg segment files and top-level files in a folder on BORG_JAN that I could view, in Windows, as B:\2021-01-01\BorgRepoJan. I compressed the contents of that folder into a WinRAR archive stored on the UTILITY drive (in the U:\BORG_JAN\WinRAR Volumes\2021-01-01 Archive folder). That WinRAR archive was theoretically named BorgRepoJan_2021-01-01.rar. In practice, I set WinRAR to break that archive into chunks of about 23GiB each, and burned those to Blu-ray discs, so those 23GB files actually had names like BorgRepoJan_2021-01-01.part01.rar.
As discussed in the previous post, experience so far seemed to recommend going through the long, tedious process of restoring the WinRAR chunks saved on all those backup BD-Rs, using WinRAR to extract the Borg segments compressed into those chunks, using Borg to restore the user files contained in those segments, and then using Beyond Compare to see if there were any differences (at least in terms of filesize and timestamp) between these restored user files and the original user files on HIST_ARCHIVE. That process confirmed that the backups were good: aside from the three files mentioned in the previous paragraph, the restored user files matched the originals perfectly. It appeared that I now had two independent, working sets of Borg archive drives and BD-R backups. With that taken care of, my final archiving step was to store the Blu-ray discs in a cool, dark, dry place, away from dust, jostling, or anything else that might compromise their integrity.
