Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev!

In Srimad Ramayana, we see that when Bharata came back from his maternal uncle’s house, he found that Rama has gone on an exile. Bharata wanted to analyze and find out the reason why Rama had gone on an exile and who is to be blamed? He was thinking on the following lines.

1. Could it be Manthara? (Kooni)
Manthara was the servant maid of Kaikeyi. We all know that she instigated Kaikeyi to get the boons from King Dasharatha by explaining to Kaikeyi the opulence which Kausalya would achieve if Rama becomes the King. But Bharatha hastened to say, "No. She is not to be blamed. She is only Kaikeyi’s servant and so her well wisher. She wanted the well being of her mistress and for that she cannot be blamed."

2. Could it be Kaikeyi?
Then Bharatha started thinking whether his own mother Kaikeyi is to be blamed for getting the two boons from the king and thus banishing Rama to forest. Why should she pay heed to the words of her servant? Bharatha again hastened to say, "No. She is not to be blamed. Kaikeyi is after all a mother and her affection towards her son made her ask the boons. So she is not to be blamed."

3. Could it be Dasaratha?
Even if Kaikeyi had asked for the boons out of motherly love and affection, Dasaratha should not have granted the boons. He should have refused to give the boons. When Bharatha was thinking of this, he again came to the conclusion that Dasaratha is not to be blamed. Ikshavaku kings never go away from the words they have given and he had to fulfill the promise. So how can he be blamed?

4. Could it be Rama Himself?
Bharatha then started thinking that even if Dasaratha had granted the boons, Rama could have very well argued His case and could have continued with the coronation. Why did not Rama do like that? Is Rama to be blamed then? Immediately Bharatha remembered that the very purpose of Rama’s incarnation is to show an ideal example to the whole world of pitr vaakya paripaalana - to be obedient to the words of parents. How will Rama ever go against this principle and hence He is not to be blamed.

At the end of it where does the blame lie and to what conclusion did Bharatha come? This we can understand from the following beautiful verse spoken by Bharata in Srimad Ramayana.

na mantharaayaah na ca maatulasyaah dosho na raajnah na ca raaghavasya
matpaapamevaatra nimittam aasit vana praveshe raghunandanasya

"Neither Manthara, nor my mother, nor the King, nor Raghava Himself are to be blamed for Rama entering the forest. It is only my own sin and only I am to be blamed."

Bharatha unexpectedly turned his fingers to himself and blamed himself for the occurrence. Can anyone blame Bharata even in their dreams? Here Bharata exhibits a rich and profound Vaishnava characteristic of accepting the faults and blaming ourselves.

Our beloved spiritual master H H Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj in one of his lectures in Singapore says:- "Unless you purify your existence, your existence is completely mogha - useless. Do not think that you can go on reading the Bhagavata purana and go on with the dirty activities again. Don’t get upset with the situations. Situations will always agitate you. You have to completely change. Please change for the good and convert your own situation into a very nice favorable situation by controlling yourself. Nobody else has the capacity to harm you. You are the one who are harming yourself.

We ourselves are to be blamed. We many times blame others because the construction of our body is such that we can only see others. I can see your face very clearly. However hard I try, I can’t see my face. I can see the reflection on the mirror but it is not the real face. Because of this bodily construction, we have a permanent tendency to blame others for our own defects and we always point our fingers at others. Frankly speaking, nobody does anything. We are the ones who are completely wrong. When you point fingers at others, you see that one finger is towards others and three fingers are towards you. So why to worry about one? Worry about three. When we start blaming ourselves, the whole thing completely subsides. You try this. In your misunderstandings, you please try this thing. So instead of blaming others for our own difficulties, we should inspect our own self and you will find out that when you create this tendency the house which was Kurukshetra yuddha will be completely very peaceful. Completely it will change for the good and all the living entities who are staying in the house will be completely satisfied. And instead of just blaming each other and shouting and screaming we will be completely peaceful and we will be smiling at each other. This is the beauty of Krishna consciousness. This is the beauty of Srimad Bhagavatam.

If Krishna enters our lives, everybody around us becomes completely satisfied. We do not worry about our own whims but we worry about the persons who are around us. Before reading Srimad Bhagavatam, we worry about our own whims, "I want this, I want this..." Instead of that, "what do you want? Alright. I will behave like that". And there ends the matter. This is Bhagavata puraana. And that is why it is amalam. Mala means dirt, contamination, material contamination particularly. Where there is no material contamination that is puraanam amalam. yad vaishnavaanaam priyam. Because it is amalam, we are vaishnava, Vishnu bhaktas and because we are Vishnu bhaktas, such purana is very dear to us. Otherwise, was Srila Prabhupada mad to sit at one ‘o clock in the morning to translate Bhagavatam? And he has given us completely clear everything. Now it is our duty to go through it and purify our life."

I pray that I give up my tendency of always blaming others for situations in my life and let me study the amalam puranam to purify my existence.

Thank you very much.
Yours in the service of Srila Prabhupada and Gurudev,
Vaijayanti mala devi dasi,
