Guess we should have a thread specifically for the status of the
site... whether it's up, down, or whatever...

Is ShadowBQ STILL on his honeymoon?

As far as I know. I haven't heard from him in quite a while. That's why I keep repeating that I'll update everyone when I have the info to do so with....

Ok... now, I'm starting to think the Well's NOT coming back....

*takes a deep breath*

I have my suscpicions too. I haven't heard a word from ShadowBQ in a long time. Last I hear, neither had anyone else. I don't know what to think, or even what to assume anymore. But, the Well isn't the only casualty. All my personal websites (except ChronoMUCK) are being hosted on ANSWorld. So, not only is this a great loss to everyone, it's a complete loss to me.

I do know he was playing around with the idea of moving to South America. It's where his wife is from and where her family resides. There is a good chance that could be where he vanished to, and he's simply having issues getting the server back online. But, of course, I have no proof of such things and they shouldn't be taken as fact.

I'll continue to do what I can from my vantage point in the mean time. I know a guy here localy with a couple of servers at his disposal, maybe I can talk to him about letting us borrow them. I do have -all- the Well of Fears images and audio/video files backed up. I have the original experimental pages of the first version of the site before Shadow re-designed it. Worst case scenerio I'll just have to get with Darkwolff and see what we can do about starting over again.

For information's sake here's the current statistics:
     Well of Fear's Images folder - 426 files - 45.7 MBs
     Well of Fear's Video folder - 19 files - 461 MBs
     Well of Fear's Audio folder - 49 files - 54.2 MBs
     The Other Side's MIDI folder - 50 files - 861 KBs

On the downside, there is no backup for the forum posts. Unless, of course Exulus will come out of hiding because I believe he made it a point to save a copy of it onto his hard drive. So, now you know what we have. What can we do about it? Personaly I'm a bit afraid of seeing us work our asses off on a new site only to have it become obsolette if and when ANSWorld finaly returns. He hosts alot of sites on that server, and basicly uses it as his comunication with his old friends. Even if it took a year, it will return. But are we patient enough to wait?

If all else fails... (and I'm very hesitant to do this) we can break the Well back into it's original group of web sites and do a temporary link-style version of the site that simply links to the related files on everyone else's pages. Personaly I think I'm going to look into wikipedia sites like the Chrono Compendium http://www.chronocompendium.com/ . I think that might be the easiest way to go... then we could all edit the pages ourselves directly.

I'm open to suggestions.

IF (and I say this with hope that the site WILL still return) there is
no other alternative, then we might need to be sure to run some sort of
backup server in case of another outage...

Darkwolff might have to reactivate his forum for us, since that's the
last good one before the Well originally came up.....

Last -good- one? Nobody used it, myself included. See... that's part of the problem. Unless someone goes to post, there isn't a point in making a forum. I proved this already with http://mpforums.servegame.com So, reactivating a site that didn't take off to begin with sounds like a bad idea to me...

Besides, if we where despirate enough we could always get a forum for free and keep it exclusivly for the Well of Fears. More importantly we need to decide what to do with the rest of the files because without them the forums are useless.

True...

We've already learned Yahoo's worthless, so without another server...
all we can do is wait on Answorld.....

If it boils down to it, and everyone deems it important enough I'll open up my computer as our new server. I've been experimenting with it anyways. So long as I remain on broadband it wouldn't be much of a bandwith issue and I do have everything backed up to begin with. I just -really- don't like the idea, but again, I was thinking about experimenting with it anyways. -If- I decide to do it, I'll make the arrangements and let everyone know. I'd prefer finding another alternative first.

That's gonna be the problem.... "everyone" at the moment is pretty much

*Does just that*

I'm all for what ever you suggest, Marr0w, to bring the Well back, and
if I can help in any way at all I'm ready and willing. Probably not, but
the offer's there! :)

Beware, some broadband providers specifically say you CAN NOT use their service to run a server.  Oh, and you know I am down for helping.  Eventually, I plan to open my own server anyway, so the more xp I can get the better.

How did I know if I suggested opening a server you'd suddenly volunteer to do so yourself as well. Be carefull there Mr Wolff, you might just rekindle that little 'friendly war' between us.

Here's what I know at this time. I've spent the past 26 hours at a friend's house here localy (the one with the servers) running ideas back and forth in reguards to the Well and the importance of it returning. Not only is he excited at the promise of the site's return he's currently in the process of getting his extra server back online. Now, this may or may not work but if it does we both agree that setting up around the wiki format would be best both for the site and the server. It would allow the site to be self-sustaining and would prevent having to create individual logins to the server itself for the administration like we did with the ANSWorld rendition. Everyone who went to the site would be given the option of creating a login name at which point they could upload images and audio and edit pages directly. Very quickly we could have the massive database we had all wanted to create. He won't do this for free and currently we're working on making arrangements. We might need to request donations to keep the system running (i.e. money for bandwith, parts, etc...) I won't know the details unless we get it up and running which is the plan for tonight. Luckily I work with the guy and we both have the next two days off. Using the wiki format we won't have to completly start the entire site over again, but mearly customise the premade template using the surplus of images I have stored here and get a domain name. Most likely it'll be a no-isp free domain name like http://welloffears.servegame.com or http://welloffears.no-isp.com I'll have to sit down and find an appropriate one. Great thing about no-isp names is that we don't get pop-ups or banners added to the pages. Worst case scenerio it'll either be a simple redirect or it'll have a very small white bar accross the bottom of the page that simply reads that the domain name was provided by no-isp.com

-IF- anyone (i.e. Darkwolff, Exulus, Faust, etc...) where to have any issues in reguards to my ideas I'll most likely open it up under the name 'The Other Side' like my original Nightmare/Atmosfear site. This would allow the Well of Fears to resume normal order once ANSWorld returns and would keep the wiki-style site online as well. I know this sounds rather demanding but I'm convinced it's the best way for us to go, and if we go through the effort of setting it up I'm not going to let that effort go to waste due to creative diffrences.

We can get php-forums exactly like the ones on ANSWorld added into the database with the wiki-site. Infact many people use the exact same original template for the same kinds of sites. The appearance the Well's forums had was mearly a optional skin that ShadowBQ developed and replaced the default skin with. This means, if/when the original site returns online we could port that exact skin over for any die-hard fans of it. Hell, we could honestly port the backup copy that Exulus made of the prefrences and posts over as well, assuming anyone could get ahold of him.

So, for a change, it's all sounding rather hopefull for us. I'll give you all more information when I have it to share. I'd greatly appreciate feedback on this proposal, and critisim will not be ignored. As I said, if too many people have a problem I'll simply continue the project with a diffrent name, but I'd prefer it didn't come to that. Let me know what you think.

As I said in my last email, any way of getting the Well back is a great
idea. I'd be happy to help donate too, when money's less tight!
