Losing a baby tooth too early can cause dental health complications, and should be addressed as soon as possible via an evaluation by an orthodontist. Depending on the age of your child and the location of the prematurely lost tooth or teeth, interceptive orthodontic treatment may be necessary.

When baby teeth go missing too early, it can allow the other teeth around them to shift out of position. And because the permanent teeth are guided into their proper positions by the baby teeth as they erupt, misaligned baby teeth can lead to misaligned adult teeth. And misaligned adult teeth require orthodontic intervention to fix.

The too-early loss of baby teeth is typically treated with a space maintainer, which is put into place until the child is 8 years old. This device literally maintains the space left behind by the prematurely lost tooth, preventing the surrounding teeth from shifting and allowing the permanent teeth to erupt into the correct positions.

Have you registered the birth of your baby? If not, you need to do this through the Births, Deaths and Marriages section of the Department of Internal Affairs before your baby is two months old. The Department of Internal Aff airs website (www.dia.govt.nz/birth-registration) has more information, including how to register online. Birth registration is free. Once registered, and on payment of the fee, a birth certifi cate is available.

Ask your midwife, nurse or doctor to help your baby feed effectively. If you feel you have a problem with breastfeeding, are worried about your milk supply, or find feeding painful, ask for help. They can provide you with information and support before and after the birth and may refer you to a lactation consultant. Hospitals run breastfeeding workshops for new mothers. Breastfeeding groups such as La Leche League also provide help.

If your baby is upset, gently rub their gums with a clean finger or the back of a cold spoon. You can also apply ice cubes wrapped in a wash cloth to the reddened cheek. Your pharmacy has special teething lotions and gels to gently massage into the gums.

It helps to continue to breastfeed while you are introducing solid foods, especially the foods that most commonly cause allergies. However, if you delay introducing these foods, it may increase the risk that your child will develop allergies to them. There is no reason to delay the introduction of foods that most commonly cause allergies (see the list of foods above). More information on feeding your baby

When the teeth break through the surface, the gums will often swell and become tender. When teething, your baby may be restless, cry, drool, have a low-grade temperature, a red cheek, disrupted eating and sleeping patterns, and a desire to bite something hard.

The third edition of Traumatic Dental Injuries: A Manual builds on the widespread success of the previous two editions. The ultimate guide to dental trauma, the manual preserves its uniquely usable and reader-friendly format, demonstrating step-by-step treatment protocols for commonly occurring traumatic injuries. Several new sections have been added to expand the number of clinical scenarios, describing soft tissue injuries associated with dental trauma, showing how decoronation of ankylosed anterior teeth in adolescents can preserve the alveolar process for later implant placement, and identifying predictors for pulpal and periodontal ligament healing complications as well as for tooth loss.
