I would very much appreciate if future versions of KiCad has an option for selecting a legacy Gerber output format. There must be other people with working PCB-manufacturing toolchains from the 1990s or early 2000s that are too expensive or hard to upgrade such as ours. We need the old (e.e. Fmt 3.4) Gerber format.

I did found some projects on github where I got access to the gerber files for pcbs in their pcb store - that I assume have been used.
I compared those gerbers with my output and the only difference I could find was:

One of our local manufacturers uses CAM 350 V.9.5 and I am using Allegro V16.01. He is having problems opening the ODB++ files that I've sent him, but I can open and view them in the Valor viewer. Has anyone come across any problem like this? We haven't had any issues with earlier versions. Could there be something in the setup file that I'm not doing properly? In the end, I sent him gerbers which he was able to use.thanks,Jackie

When I create gerber it shows exectly the same as our brd file in camtastic, but after fab brd have some pads shrted to GND. We claim that our gerbers are correct but they show us on cam350 these pads were shorted. according to fab house some thing may be wrong with gerber genration because in cam350 layers are shown as composite layers. Can any one help me to find out the actual problem then we are able to not repeat the same problem.

I don't think Cadence will create composites, but I know CAM 350 will. Try reading your gerber files into another graphical viewer such as Viewmate which can be downloaded for free. View the files, and see if the shorts show up there.

Are your DRC's up todate? Didyou review the photoplot.log file? Most of the time these 2 things will point to the problem. Alos review what Class?Subclass is enabled for the shorted layers. Most etch layers need the etch, pin and via for that layer. Make sure you do not have any extra subclasses for that film record. Also review the padstack in question for null pads on inner layers.

We have upto date DRC. we told that our design has no error but gerber not matches the design in some places. I also open it in gerbtool, it also shows composite layers. If we dont have any composite layer why it breaks one layer into 2 or three layers.

The gertool and older versions of CAM350 will create the composite layers. Newer versions of CAM350 will combine them into a composite layer. What you are seeing is the way the gerber viewers read in the RS274X data. I would suggest trying to review your gerbers using the File>Export>ODB++. You will have to work with your board house. They should provide you with X,Y locations of the shorts.

You can read ODB++ files into Viewmate to check them. I still think the problem is CAM 350 related, and the board house somehow created a composite. What else can be done? CAM350 has a demo version you can download for free. It has limits on what can be done (not much), but you can read your gerber data in to view it up to a certain file size. it will usually read in at least a few layers for ya. Take you gerber data, read it into CAM350, see for yourself if your data contains composites.
