Our recommendation: Stay up to date and be sure to always be using the most current version of the EPLAN Platform. These highlights celebrated their premieres in earlier versions and are naturally still included in the current EPLAN Platform.

For the newest generation of the software, all you need is one single login* to access all EPLAN solutions. In this way you benefit from a clever integration of the EPLAN Platform with our cloud solutions.

I have a dual monitor setup, and I recently played around with the positioning settings, and some of my single window applications do the favour of preserving where they were last closed, and opening in the same position later. Unfortunately, that now places them out of the viewable area of my screens!

You can right-click the program's button on the taskbar, and then click "Move". You can now use the arrow-buttons on your keyboard to move the window where you can see it. Requires some fiddling, sometimes the windows get "stuck" on the monitors edges. You can also try using the mouse, but the keyboard is a bit more reliable if you can't see the window yet ;-)

Back before there was the task bar, I used to fix this problem with Alt+Space to bring up the window menu, then M for the Move function. The arrow keys would then allow you to move the window back on-screen.

I ran into this problem, and absolutely nothing worked for me. So I went into Task Manager, and right-clicked the program that was off screen. Switch to didn't work, nor did bring to front. To note, this was a static window, so maximize was unavailable via the taskbar. But you can maximize via the Task Manager, and that brings it to your main display! From there you can do whatever you need to with the window. :)

To quickly solve this problem in the future, and to position applications over the dual-screen I can recommend Winsplit Revolution. It reduces solving this problem to simply pressing Ctrl-Alt and a num-pad key to put the window back exactly where you want it.

I use a nifty little tool called Shove-it which simply checks whether any window is outside the screen edge and shoves it back onto the screen again. It's ancient software (and the homepage proves it) but works on all Windows versions.

I just ran into this problem with Git GUI on Windows 7, which is based on Tk and as such tends to glitch out in weird ways at times on Windows. I tried hitting Alt-Space and using the move command to shimmy it back into view, but it seemed stuck. Maximising it would bring it back, but if I put it back into windowed mode it would disappear again.

What I did was maximise it, grab the title bar, and drag it to the side of the screen so that Aero Snap sized it to half the screen size and put it into windowed mode. After that, I dragged it away from the side of the screen, and regained control of it.

In some cases, despite having multiple screens at the remote location, you may not have access to them from your location. The key commands won't work because you have been locked out of any view that is not on your screen.

In this case, if you can open additional instances of the application, do so. The first few instances will almost certainly appear in the task bar as yet more phantom windows. Keep doing this. Eventually, they will begin to populate the primary view. Then use the task bar icon to right click and close the off-screen instances. Once there are NO off-screen instances open, close the ones on the primary screen. Next time you open that application, it will appear on the primary screen and not "off camera."

Sometimes it is hard to know blindly where the hidden window is located (and thus how to move it towards the screen). Animations during selection of the window might be helpful. Due to my setup (I occasionally use a second screen on top of my laptop screen), windows that appear off screen are usually below. Holding Alt+F7+Up therefore brings them into view.

Win + Alt + Arrow: Move the active window to the monitor whose direction is indicated by the arrow. Note that this may cause your window to move outside the screen if you try to go up from monitor 2 or right from monitor 3 in your setup. I'll update it in the future.

I've written a tool called Borderline that will automatically move off-screen windows back on-screen when run. You have to run it when you need it (works best if you assign it a keyboard shortcut or put it in the start menu), but that also means it's not always running in the background.

Your Windows PC
The exact approved PC configurations can be found on the EPLAN Quickstart webpage, but essentially you will need a Windows PC with a 64 bit OS installed to run any current version of EPLAN. You might also try the EPLAN Help file which is an online resource.

EPLAN also requires the use of a third party database program to run the EPLAN Parts Manager database, which stores all the manufacturers parts info and links to important reference documents & macros.

You do not need to actually have a version of MS Office with Access installed, but you will need a 64 bit version of office installed and then an Access Runtime patch. I use Office 2016 Home & Business with a 64 bit Microsoft Access Database Engine Redistributable and it works just fine.

This will be the most robust path moving forward but it can be a bit intimidating for the first time user. If you are in a larger company with an IT department, then the SQL path may be pretty easy to implement. For users with 32 bit or 64 bit versions of Office, SQL is a robust alternative to a shared Access database. EPLAN works just fine with both SQL and SQL express and I have even seen SQL express set up on a windows file share for team use.

When you purchase a standalone license from EPLAN you will receive a fairly large box with several items in it, some of these items are overlooked which then complicates the installation. There are essentially four items that you must have to install the application:

The Envelope
The shipping box also contains a large envelope which contains several important documents, this envelope is often grabbed at shipping & receiving and sent to other departments. The envelope contains:

Everything else
There are other documents such as software agreements and copies of the invoice but to the end user, the two documents listed above are what you are interested in. Make some copies.

Software Download
You will now need to go to the EPLANUSA support website to download the desired version of the software since CDs are no longer shipped. You will need to register to access the download area which will require your dongle # and customer ID. Most users will download and run the most current version of EPLAN but you are also welcome to install an older version if desired.

This step trips up a lot of users. The supplied license dongle needs drivers to run in most cases and they are not always loaded when EPLAN is installed. When you install your dongle into a USB port on your PC it should light up, you should also see it in your device manager under USB Controllers

The drivers are supplied with your EPLAN install files but they are pretty hard to find unless you know where to look. Download the EPLAN install files from the support center and unzip them, look for a path similar to: EPLAN_Electric_P8_2.7.zip\Electric P8 2.7.3.11418\ELM\Services (x64)\Drivers

This is the default installation path, please use it if you can. Even if you plan to set up EPLAN to function in a shared team environment, it is important to ALSO have the default install files. These files come in handy when you call the support team or when you you want to use EPLAN when you are not connected to your company network. EPLAN has tools for switching quickly between local master data and networked master data.

When the Master Data folders are created EPLAN will also create several sub folders with your company code, enter a short version of your company name here, typically 3-7 digits, but it can be longer.

Yes, you can install EPLAN without the latest and greatest 64 bit version of Microsoft Office however I would certainly encourage you to have it, but with this knowledge you can solve some interesting problems that you may encounter.

If you go to the EPLAN website and read the official instructions on how to install EPLAN, they will lead you to believe that you can install EPLAN using a 32 bit version of MS office, but then they never seem to explain to you how to do that! In this post I will explain how to get EPLAN up and running with or without MS Office or SQL.

For those of you who are just looking for the fully approved methods for installing EPLAN you can find the instructions on the EPLAN Quick Start webpage. I suggest that you also create a bookmark for it in your browser as you will want to visit this page whenever you have questions about installation.

EPLAN can use several databases for parts management, project management and the translation dictionary, these databases are created either in the MS Access (.mdb) format or in SQL. EPLAN can also makes use of MS excel to assist with data import/export as well as an external data editor.

For many years EPLAN used the MS Access database format (mdb) exclusively for handling its database needs but recently they have branched out to also include support for SQL databases. Early versions of EPLAN (

The EPLAN Platform, Version 2.7 will be delivered as a 64-bit version only. Office 32-bit can still be used, however, SQL or SQL Express will then be needed for the parts database, the translation database and the project management database.
