COME July 25, Nigeria will, for the first time, mark the Nigerian
Diaspora Day, a day set apart for recognizing and celebrating the
Nigerian diaspora, Chairman of the Nigerians In the Diaspora (NIDO),
Joe Keshi has said.

"With the theme: 'Strengthening Partnerships with the Nigerians in the
Diaspora for National Science and Technology Development,' our hope is
to build on the success achieved last year and establish a permanent
platform that would encourage development of synergy between Nigerians
in the Diaspora and the Nigerian state, such that the Nigerian Diaspora
could contribute in helping to promote Nigeria's economic growth and
development," Keshi said.

He said that setting apart the day "is part of the efforts of the
government to mobilize and encourage the participation of the Nigerian
Diaspora in Nigeria's development process thereby providing the
Nigerian Diaspora ample opportunities to contribute to the
transformation of Nigeria into a modern industrialized nation."

Keshi, who is also the Coordinator of the Nigerian National Volunteers
Service (NNVS), said the day would be marked with a number of
activities such as the second Science Conference, parallel workshops
(including one on project collaboration and execution) and some other
events of interest to the Nigerians in the Diaspora.
