"Running for a second term is allright. It is accepted in the
constitution. But he must not run for a third occasion. Because that
would be an abuse of his popularity. It is sufficient if he runs twice
and then ends at that...One thing I don't like is when people think
that they are the only one in the country that can run. They amend the
constitution. Where it is two terms, they make it three terms."

Nelson Mandela advising President Obasanjo on August 23rd, 2003 (3
years ago!) not to plunge the country into chaos on account of a
third-term ambition.

"You know, when I became president, I didn't want to be president.
But Mr. (Walter) Sisulu and two others came to see me. They said they
had consulted very well and they said I must be president.
"I told them I am 72. Give it to a younger man. I can't do this.
But Sisulu sat me down to remind me that I have always appreciated the
value of collective leadership, that no leader must ignore collective
leadership.

"So I couldn't ignore their request, but I said to them: one term!
I would serve only one term. Then they said, 'we would decide
that.' So, when I became president, I made an announcement that I was
serving only one term and there was nothing they could say."
