Nigeria: Yellow fever outbreak in Bauchi state
  OVERVIEW
Level: Advisory
Location: Nigeria

   Last Updated: 06 Sep 2019 11:10 (GMT)

An outbreak of yellow fever has been reported in Bauchi state. Yellow fever is a potentially severe viral illness spread via mosquito bites. It can be prevented through vaccination and by avoiding mosquito bites. All travellers over 9 months old are recommended to be vaccinated and required to have proof of yellow fever vaccination to enter the country.

  ADVICE

See your doctor well in advance of travel and provide them with details of your intended destinations and route. Vaccination requirements may change at any time.

  • Vaccination is recommended to prevent infection for everyone > 9 months of age.
  • A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for entry for anyone > 9 months of age. If proof of vaccination cannot be provided, entry may be denied. The vaccination certificate becomes valid 10 days after the vaccine was administrated, and is valid for the life of the traveller. From 1 July 2019, an "e-Yellow card" will be the only valid documented proof of vaccination against yellow fever for Nigerian citizens and residents. An International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) issued outside Nigeria is still accepted for non-Nigerian citizens and non-Nigerian residents.
  • For onward travel from Nigeria some countries may deny entry on arrival if travellers cannot show a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate.
  • Prevent mosquito bites:
    • Use an effective insect repellent that contains DEET, Picaridin, PMD or IR3535.
    • Wear protective clothing (long pants and sleeves, socks) as weather permits.

  MORE DETAIL

Cases of yellow fever have been confirmed in Bauchi state. Of them at least three cases are residents of Alkaleri Local Government Area (LGA) in Bauchi, while one is from Kano state who has a history of visit to Yankari Games Reserve which is also located in Alkaleri LGA. A Rapid Response Team has been deployed to support investigation and response to the outbreak.

Several students from Borno state have fallen ill after visit to Yankari Games Reserve in August 2019. At least six have died. Investigations are ongoing to identify whether these students have been infected with yellow fever virus.

Yellow fever is a risk throughout the whole country and sporadic outbreaks are reported.

What is Yellow Fever?

Yellow fever is a viral disease that occurs in parts of Africa and South America. It is transmitted by mosquitoes. Although some people infected with yellow fever only have a mild illness, others develop a serious toxic form of the disease. The symptoms range from a mild influenza-like syndrome to a severe hemorrhagic fever with liver failure. There is no specific treatment for the disease. Between 20%-50% of people who have a severe case of yellow fever die from the disease. Because yellow fever can spread easily, many countries require proof of an up-to-date yellow fever vaccination before they allow travellers to enter the nation. Some require all travellers to be vaccinated before entry, while others only require vaccination if you have recently travelled from an infected (or endemic) country. Vaccination certificates become valid 10 days after receiving the vaccine, and remain valid for the lifetime of the person vaccinated.
