World Stroke Day 29 October 2012: Atrial fibrillation is a modifiable risk factor for stroke
New anti-thrombotic treatments in atrial fibrillation patients can reduce the risk of stroke. There is good evidence that people with an irregular heart beat should have it checked by a doctor. The link between atrial fibrillation - the most common disturbance of heart rhythm - and risk of stroke is now beyond dispute, with studies indicating that diagnosed atrial fibrillation (AF) increases the risk of stroke five times. Calling an ambulance improves heart attack survival
Patients with chest pain symptoms who call an ambulance have quicker, more appropriate treatment and better survival. A study from Denmark shows that calling emergency services allows pre-hospital triage and transport to the most appropriate hospital... Read the full press release
Women more likely to die from myocardial infarction than men
The gender gap in mortality was independent of patient characteristics, revascularisation delays and revascularisation modalities. Women also had longer treatment delays, less aggressive treatment, more complications and longer hospital stays. Read the full press release
Is peripheral artery disease uncommon in women? An article from the e-journal of the ESC Council for Cardiology Practice
