WHF URGES GOVERNMENTS TO PRIORITIZE HYPERTENSION TREATMENT AT 4TH UN HIGH-LEVEL MEETING ON NCDS

In a press release embargoed for 6 August, the World Heart Federation is calling on world leaders to scale up hypertension treatment to 500 million more people by 2030 — a key step in addressing the global cardiovascular disease (CVD) crisis and saving millions of lives.

This is one of five critical actions WHF is urging governments to commit to at the upcoming UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs and Mental Health this September.

Despite CVD being the world’s leading cause of death, it remains underfunded and under-prioritized. WHF’s message is clear: without dedicated national CVD strategies, the global response to noncommunicable diseases will continue to fall short.

WHF’s 5 Key Asks for the Political Declaration:
  • Treat 500 million more people with hypertension by 2030, aiming for 50% hypertension control
  • Tax tobacco, alcohol, and sugar-sweetened beverages by at least 50%
  • Implement the WHO 2021 air quality guidelines to reduce pollution and prevent CVD deaths
  • Address systemic health inequities and ensure sustainable financing for CVD management
  • Commit to a 50% reduction in NCD-related deaths and disability by 2050

“Of the 163 WHO Member States, only 16 have national action plans dedicated to heart health,” says WHF CEO Finn-Jarle Rode. “This is unacceptable. We must accelerate progress and equip countries with the tools they need to prioritize CVD.”
