To: "Blendon, Robert J." <rble...@hsph.harvard.edu>

Dear Colleagues:

It gives me great pleasure to announce the arrival of two Richard L. and Ronay A. Menschel Senior Leadership Fellows this fall in the Division of Policy Translation and Leadership Development at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

pateDr. Muhammad Pate, M.D.  Nigeria’s former Minister of State for Health will be a Menschel Senior Leadership Fellow in the Fall 1 2016 term. As a fellow, Dr. Pate will teach an eight-week course in the Harvard Chan’s Global Health Department  entitled “Leadership Development in Global Health: Building Community Trust Networks.”

Dr. Pate served as Nigeria’s Minister of State for Health from 2011-2013, when he resigned to take up a position as Adjunct Professor at Duke University Global Health Institute. During his tenure as Minister, Dr. Pate effectively led the Presidential Task Force on Polio Eradication in Nigeria and developed an innovative results-based initiative to Save One Million Lives (SOML) from preventable mortality by reviving the primary health care system. Prior to his role as Minister, he was the Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) in Abuja, Nigeria. Dr. Pate is a Senior Fellow of the Nigeria Leadership Initiative and advised the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on polio eradication, routine immunization, and primary health care system development. He serves on the agenda committee of the World Economic Forum and is a member of the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) on Vaccination and Humanitarian Emergencies at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva. Dr. Pate is an American Board-Certified MD in both Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. He graduated with a medical degree from the Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria, holds an MBA (Health Sector Concentration) from Duke University, and a Masters in Health System Management from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, UK.

Rt. Hon. Prof. Baroness Tessa Jowell, D.B.E. former Minister of State for Public Health in Great Britain, will be a Menschel Senior Leadership Fellow in the Fall 2 2016 term. As a fellow, Baroness Jowell will teach an eight-week course in the Harvard Chan’s Health Policy Management department entitled “Health Policy and Leadership: Why Do We Know So Much and Do So Little?

Baroness Jowell served as a Member of British Parliament from 1992-2015. Throughout these years, she held several positions in government, such as Minister of State for Public Health (1997-1999), Minister of State for Employment, Welfare to Work and Equal Opportunities (1999-2001), and Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport and member of the Cabinet (2001-2007). Baroness Jowell also initiated and managed the winning bid for the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics and led the development of the project for eight years. Prior to becoming a Member of Parliament, Baroness Jowell’s career included experience in public service as a mental health practitioner, senior manager, public service reform expert, and social policy analyst. Baroness Jowell serves on the Advisory Board of the Ministerial Leadership in Health Program, a joint initiative of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Baroness Jowell studied sociology and psychology at the University of Aberdeen and earned a master’s degree in social administration from the University of Edinburgh. In June 2016, Baroness Jowell received an honorary Doctorate of Laws (LLD) from the University of Aberdeen.

The Senior Leadership Fellows Program offers a rare opportunity for those who have recently served in top-level positions in government, multilateral institutions, non-profit organizations, and journalism to spend several months at the School to share leadership vision and experiences via mentoring and teaching of students who aspire to similar roles.  Senior Leadership Fellows interact with Harvard faculty and participate in campus life at the School and University.  Fellows also participate in the Voices in Leadership webcast series.
