Update from the Coalition- Read

Dear All,
Greetings from LITE-Africa. I am writing to update us on what the Coalition has been up to in recent months. There are very pressing issues which have dragged the Coalition behind from its prior active status and prevented it from making significant progress.

On July 9th, 2015 some members of the Coalition met at the just concluded Niger Delta Civic Engagement Forum hosted by USAID to deliberate on the challenges preventing the Coalition from achieving her stated objectives. At this meeting, the Secretariat noted that since the last meeting held in Warri, there has been a lag in activities as members expected the Steering Committee to provide the needed leadership and work towards refining and circulating the governance document.

We have also in the past, tried to engage members of the Steering Committee on a Skype Call since we are not able to fund meetings currently. Unfortunately, only a few showed seriousness while others didn’t respond maybe due to work exigencies.

On this note, I want to throw three key questions for us in order to determine the way forward. There are and have been many developments in Nigeria in the past and recent months that require our voice as a coalition; issues bothering on corporate accountability and rule of law. We are yet to explore these issues and the opportunities therein.

The questions follow:
1) Since the Steering Committee was given their mandate by members, it seems that some of them have lost interest and commitment to their responsibilities. Do we retain or dissolve the present Committee?

2) We have also realized that members prefer to attend structured and funded meetings rather than partake in online interactions. The question is, can we fund our trips to meetings either in Port Harcourt or Warri?

3) We have also understood that some members joined the Coalition based on different expectations. How do we as a Coalition meet these expectations while at the same time balancing the interest of others?

The answers to these questions would help us to address the present challenges confronting the Coalition and refocus towards meeting our objectives.

Thanks for the mail and the few questions which to my mind all the question can only be better answered by you because this network came up as a result of a project you manage therefore it success and failure is in your hand because you have to be proactive and pragmatic in your planning.

I remember before now how you use to only plan your programmes only when there is  project of Global Rights in port harcourt because you are afraid of doing the needful and you think people don't know and at the end of the day you expect them to dance to your course. To win someone to your course first convince him or her that you are a sincere friend.

Let me sincerely disagree with you on the aspect that the problem of the network is the non performance of the steering committee. If the truth must be accepted you are the problem of the network. Imagine you now telling us that there was a USAID programme. Why didn't you for the sake of working to strengthen the network knowing fully well that it originated from your own programme co-opt and invites members of the steering committee to attend the programme which would have serve a dual purpose of providing an opportunity for the committee members to meet without you having to spend.

Secondly, even if we dissolve and form another steering committee it is going to be the same five fingers of that particular leprosariums hand, the way out is for you Jerry in particular to do your home work  well in a manner that gives recognition to other people's rights to work with you without grumbling. Think! If you have question ask me but try and communication where other will see don't send me a personal Mail on this. Let the discussion continue folks I may be wrong.

Jerry from the way your mail sound, it would seem as if you already had figured the way out of the many issues of the network. First thing first, we need to go back to the table to think through our objectives and come up with one objective that we can follow through, one that meets the overall goal of promoting business and human rights. Secondly have we tried to speak to members of the steering committee to know why they seem not to show deep commitment? If yes what was their response? I sincerely think that we need to  exhaust all avenues of peaceful resolution of our differences before we as a house can decide on dissolution or not.

Thanks for your wonderful response. Every suggestion is noted but lets focus on issues and not to attack any one in particular. As you know, I don't have any leadership role over the Coalition other than to provide some level of guidance and motivation knowing fully well that as a group we have to go through various forms of group development before we get to our desired level.

Coalition building is one of the most difficult task for any civil society and we should all bear in mind that it requires patience, persistence and commitment before it can address the expectations of everyone. If we don't have anyone to push, the Coalition will die a natural death.

I am not disappointed at our email, because I expected you as a member of the Steering Committee to properly suggest ways forward for the Coalition having gone through the governance document which I strongly suspect you have not. Let's dwell on issues, that's the key.

You were invited to participate in our Skype conference call before the USAID forum in Port Harcourt, which you never responded to or acknowledged the invitation. I am so happy that at least you have shared your thoughts on how to make progress.

Let me also remind you that the Coalition was never a PRODUCT of a project of LITE-Africa as you were part of the inaugural ceremony in Port Harcourt of which John Onyeukwu facilitated the meeting. You funded your trip to our Port Harcourt meeting alongside other passionate members. Other projects were used to support Coalition meetings subsequently. Let me also remind you that the Coalition was a product and ideas from representatives from LITE-Africa and CLEEN Foundation and not just only LITE-Africa that came up with the idea.

In the last meeting in Warri, we also agreed that in order to help sustain the activities of the Coalition, members should endeavor to seek how they can sponsor meetings on their own and communicate that to us for proper planning.

The issues affecting the Coalition basically bother on group development and cannot be linked to a single individual. More so, these issues sprang up immediately after we constituted the Steering Committee as funds were no longer in place. Even ACCA is facing the same issues as we speak.

Please lets think through our responses and be more factual as our public conduct often reveal the manner we run our affairs.

We are open to more ideas and suggestions as we seek ways to strengthen the Coalition.

We are also not saying that we must dissolve the Steering Committee for the Coalition to function, but we expect members to suggest the way forward on how to go about this.

If you said that the coalition was not an outcome of a project which you managed what prompt you to initiate the Skype conference call and why did that had to happen when you were about to engaged in a project, with USAID?

Two, in all the meetings you organized both the ones we paid our ways and the ones you paid our way what was the role of CLEEN Foundation was Mr. John Onyeukwu a staff of CLEEN then or a consultant for Lite Africa?

You don't have to forget too soon that you used me to meet with some community members in Ibeno as part of the project that led to the formation of this Coalition, true or false?

Did you organized a National programme in Abuja wherein you announced that you have form a coalition to look at issues of Business and Human Rights, why didn't CLEEN consigned the invitation which I help you shared  before you realized that you can use and dump idiot like me?

Yes it is true that forming a coalition is always difficult but let me tell you that the difficulty is always associated with insincerity as in this case otherwise it doesn't take much for people to come together so long as there is leadership that earn the people's trust. Let it not look as if I am attacking any person here but permit me to tell you that in my own little experience, no tyranny of circumstances can permanently imprisoned a determined will except only if such will is shrouded in insincerity.

I know what CLEEN foundation can do and we have been doing it together in that organization so you don't need to look for who to blame. Simply tell us you are sorry and we can see how we can mend fences if it works we go ahead if it doesn't work we forget.

You know very well I am not a sycophant after all my little record speaks for me. As a way forward let forget about all the " dogoturenchi" that we know.

Simply tell all of us that you are sorry for your I too know mentality which you brought to bear on our collective intelligence and integrity simple.

You are my good friend and I don't want you to be like this  because it could be that you have now meet another funded who may want to support a project which could be better handle in a coalition and you now remember the  "mugus"  don't forget an Igbo adage that says " onye rere Nikita gota enwe, ibe ntufu ka no nu uloya" if  you sell your dog to buy a monkey, means of gathering and scattering is still in your house. That is no progress.

Mr. Akpan,

You are sounding very aggrieved. Please if you know your rights has been violated, kindly report to the appropriate channel and I am with full assurance, it will be addressed.

You have not been able to articulate your suggestions properly on the way forward and thinking that you can speak on behalf of others doesn't make you the Coalition PRO.

We appreciate your honest feedback but it seems you (Angel Gabriel) have personal issues as you are busy claiming that others are insincere and you are the saint. I suggest once again that you should write formally to the Coalition and let us look through if there are violation of the established codes of conduct or statutes guiding members conduct. But if your issues are personal and does not have any connection with the activities or Charter of the Coalition, please I suggest you report to the management of LITE-Africa to seek redress.


Let me repeat again, let us be guided by our public utterances as relationship destroyed online may be difficult to be repaired offline.

Also note that, we attended a forum as partners of SACE project in Port Harcourt and USAID is not funding the Coalition or about to fund our activities. Please be guided.

Don't be quick to respond as I don't expect any further exchange with you on this issue. Let us give others the opportunity to reflect on the way forward. And kindly report any issue you have to LITE-Africa and not on this platform. I hope you respect that.

I am on the path with Mr Emeka Ononamadu, before i also lend my voice please clarify those issues raised, as a member of the steering committee i will also want you to remember what we agreed at the last meeting of the committee after the election that the next meeting will take place where committee chairman resides and you remember our last conversation was online when CLEEN FOUNDATION rejected to chair after weeks still online we nominated Hamzat of CODE to be the new chair and that was the end. Gentlemen.

I read with dismay the exchange between Saviour and Jerry on this platform in the past 24 hours.

Our objective should at this point be to move the Steering Committee forward and not to stir discord.

May I suggest that we first end the tone of this thread of mail on a reconciliatory note and then, start a objective discussion on another thread on how to ensure the steering committee meets,  and how to move the coalition forward.

Dear Abi,

I am most grateful to your kind advice which to me comes from a caring sister and mother within the community of the struggle. Much as I don't have anything personal against Jerry I only felt bad about his own style of displaying his prowess which rather seems to be somewhat exploitative.

But permit me to say here that with these few lines of kind word from you I would not like to equate myself further with Jerry on this because it will not land us well, no matter who survives.

But let it be known that the sword of justice can never be sheath so long as the scale is still being fill, so let it not be taken here that I have sheath my sword but I am only sorry if I may have over react. Jerry should to do the right thing because it is extremely unfair that we would be critiquing Government of non compliance and yet we do more that even those we criticized. I strongly believe that the Truth can only set us free if we know the lies that taking us hostage.
