Choosing Your Baby Sex Using Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD)

Posted: 03 Oct 2013 10:03 PM PDT

Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis is one of the scientific ways through which a woman can choose the sex of her baby. In vitro fertilization is the medical breakthrough that made PGD possible. So, one cannot understand PGD without understanding IVF.

What is in vitro fertilization?

In vitro fertilization simply means fertilization outside the womb or fertilization occurring in a test tube. “In vitro” means ‘in a glass.’ So, the egg is fertilized with a sperm in a test tube before it is implanted into the womb of a woman. It is introduced in order to enable women who cannot get pregnant to have children of their own. Fertility drug is administered to them in order to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs rather than the usual one that is released in the oviduct during ovulation.

The doctors will extract the eggs from the woman’s body using needle which is inserted via the vaginal wall. The sperm is obtained from their male counterpart.  The sperm will be used to fertilize the eggs in a petri dish. The fertilized zygote will be implanted using catheter into the woman’s womb.

What is preimplantation genetic diagnosis?

After in vitro fertilization, the zygote is taken to lab to be tested and screened for sex selection. This is what is known as preimplantation genetic diagnosis. At the initial time, it was introduced for the purpose of gender selection. It was mainly used to test for genetic disorders. It was first introduced in 1989 with the intention of preventing children whose parents have genetic disorders from having the same disorder. However, it is used today for the purpose of sex selection as well.

PGD is one of the most scientific means of selecting a baby’s gender that gives high accuracy. Scientists spend time to study the zygote using a number of techniques which will enable them to discover the sex of the baby. Several embryos are produced at the same time. So, you are more likely to get the gender you want. When the right sex is determined and screened for genetic disorder, it will be implanted inside the womb of the woman where it will complete the gestation period of a woman and be delivered like every other woman.

Benefits

PGD gives a lot of benefits to couple that uses it. In the first instance, it will help them to get the gender that they want. Secondly, during the screening test, the embryo will also be tested for genetic disorder. In other words, the baby will be genetically sound. Besides, only healthier embryos are screened and implanted into the woman. Finally, it enables couples to get a child of their own with the same genetic information.

Disadvantages

Preimplantation genetic disorder also has its own disadvantage. In the first instance, it is highly costly and so not within the financial reach of many couple.   The process of egg extraction can be very painful. The fertility drugs used can cause some side effects like swelling, bloating, blurred vision, weight gain and others.

Ericsson Method of Selecting Baby’s Gender

Posted: 05 Oct 2013 11:46 AM PDT

Deep studies have been carried out by medical experts on human reproduction. Through these studies, a lot has been revealed about male sperm cells and female egg as well as their behavior. What have been learnt about them has stirred up further research on gender selection. The result of these researches has been positive. One can today use various scientific methods to choose the gender of their babies. One of the effective scientific methods of determining one’s baby gender is the Ericsson method. This method was name Dr. Ericsson Albumin who discovered it during the mid 1970s.

What is Ericsson method of sex selection?

Ericsson method of sex selection is a scientific method of selecting the sex of a baby by separating the speedy swimming boy producing sperm cell from the girl producing sperm cell that is sluggish in swimming. After the two sperm cells have been separated, the desired is taken and transferred into the oviduct for fertilization to take place. Before understanding this method, one should first understand the behavior of the two sperms upon which the method is predicated.

Female and male sperm cells

The female sperm cell contains the X chromosomes while the male sperm cells contain the X chromosome. During coitus, millions of sperm cells are released by the man into the vagina of the woman. The journey of the sperm cells via the vagina through the cervical to oviduct is a kind of survival of the fittest. Most of the sperm cells die on the way. However, only one sperm cell will fertilize the ovum and so even if all of them make, only one will eventually fertilize egg. In other words, the rest will eventually die off.

However, it is more likely that the male producing sperm will get to the oviduct first if they did not die on the way. This is because they swim faster than the female producing sperm. However, the female producing sperm which is big headed survive longer than the male producing sperm.

How is Ericsson method done?

As it has been said and described above, this method capitalizes on the movement of the sperm cells. A sample of sperm cell is poured in test tube with a gluey layer of fluid. The sperm cells will start swimming down the bottom of the tube. However, the faster boy producing sperm cells will get there first before the female making it possible for them to be separated. Through artificial insemination, the desired on will be injected inside the oviduct.

The success rate of this method is higher on the side of male. Choosing boy has a success rate of 78% to 85%.  In female, it is 73% to 75%/.

Benefits

The method is noninvasive. It does not involve the puncturing of the skin in anyway.

It is not as expensive as In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and MicriSort methods

Relatively speaking, it is not too risky.

Many hospitals in many states in the US offer the service to any person that wants it.

MicroSort: a Scientific Means of Selecting Your Baby

      Posted: 07 Oct 2013 08:09 AM PDT

Science has made significant improvement in the field of reproduction. Previously, one depended on nature and luck when they were procreating. Nobody could determine or choose the sex of their baby. All they could do was to look on Providence hoping that their pregnancy would result to what they longed for. But the story has changed today. Medical science through years of research has changed the ball game. Now, one can determine the sex of their babies either scientifically or naturally. MicroSort is one of the various scientific ways through which one can determine or choose the sex of their babies.

It was introduced in 1995. In 2012, it was utilized in a clinical trial. However, MicroSort has not sought for the approval of the method by the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

      What is MicroSort?

MicroSort is a scientific method of selecting the gender of one’s baby by using a dye technique to separate the boy-producing sperm cells from the girls producing sperm cell. When the sperm cells are separated, the desired sperm cell will be introduced into the uterus via artificial insemination (AI). This method in success rate is more on the side of female gender. It is 74% successful when it is being used to choose the male gender and 88% when it is being used to choose the female gender. The method has been utilized to produce 1,400 pregnancies in 2010.

      How is it done?

MicroSort method is predicated on the knowledge of the different in size of the boy producing sperm which carry the Y chromosome and the girl producing sperm that carry the X chromosomes. The former is smaller in size than the later. Fluorescent dye is used to color a sperm sample. Given the size of the female producing sperm, it absorbs more dye and glow bigger when the sperm sample is illuminated with a laser. This will make it easy to separate the sperm and the desired ones are taken and inserted inside the uterus for fertilization to take place.

      Benefits

MicroSort method of baby selection gives some benefits besides making it possible for you to choose the sex of your baby. In the first instance, the method is not as expensive as in vitro fertilization (IVF). Secondly, it does not lead to any waste of embryo as it is the case with IVF. Thus, it does not generate much moral issue. It is also a good means of preventing X-linked disorders. Women that have this disorder can transfer it to their babies. However, this disorder can only be transferred from mothers to male babies. It is not transferrable to female babies. Note!

The procedure has not been approved; only the clinical trials have been completed. This coupled with the fact that it is relatively a new method makes it unsafe to be used. Its possible negative side effect has not been known. The above are just the few concerns about this method of gender selection.

The Whelan Method of Sex Selection

          Posted: 07 Oct 2013 11:59 PM PDT

There are basically two types of gender of selection method, namely, the natural method and the scientific method. The natural method of sex selection has various types including the Shettles method, 0×12 method and the Whelan method. They are all about timing intercourse at a particular point of woman’s monthly cycle. Here, we will be discussing the Whelan method.

Whelan Method of sex selection is one of the natural methods of choosing a gender which couple who wants to determine the sex of their babies but do not want to go the scientific way can follow. The method is named after the person that developed it. Elizabeth Whelan, Sc. D carried on the area of sex selection and discovered that certain biochemical changes during a woman’s monthly period can help to determine the sex of a baby. She wrote a book which contains the result of her finding. The book is titled Boy or Girl.

According to Whelan, her method will give 68% assurance to couples that want to choose boy babies. The success rate of choosing baby girl using this method is 56 percent. However, some medical experts have doubted the effectiveness of the method.

How the Whelan is carried out?

The Whelan method is a contradiction of the Shettles method. Whelan given her discoveries on the effect of biochemical changes on the sperm cells held a contrary position from Shettles position. According to her the boy producing sperm cells are better favored by the biochemical changes that occur earlier in a woman’s cycle than the female producing sperm cells.

Based on her discovery, she recommends that couple that wants to have male issues should consider having sexual intercourse four to six days before the basal body temperature of the woman goes up. Shettles on the other hand recommends the opposite, that is having sex when the woman is ovulating.

For those that want to have female child, Whelan recommends that they have coitus two to three days before basal body temperature rises and this is contrary to the recommendation of Shettles. Whelan argues that most pregnancies that result in male issues occur after sexual intercourse is done few days before ovulation.

Similarities of Whelan and Shettles Method

What Whelan method has in come with Shettles method of selecting gender is that both require timing of the ovulation time. In other words, one needs to know their ovulation time before they can apply any of the methods very well.

          Advantages of the Whelan method

Just like the Shettles method, the Whelan method of gender selection is purely natural and so it does not require any hospital visit or medical procedures. It is done at home and it does not interfere with normal life activities. Secondly, it is within the financial means of everybody because it does not cost a dime.

          Disadvantages

          • The success rate is low.
          • Husband and wife are conditioned when it comes to having sex if they want to get positive result. This means that the couple has to become celibate temporary on the days they are not supposed to have intercourse unless they apply artificial contraception.

Determining the Gender of Your Baby Using Sex Selection Kit

              Posted: 09 Oct 2013 01:15 AM PDT

One of the major challenges of baby making today revolves around gender selection. Every gender is good and none should be regarded as more important than the other. However, at times a couple may prefer one gender to another owing to a number of reasons. Sometimes cultural influences or even economic reasons may cause a couple to look for a particular sex rather than the other. These issues can create tensions in marriage. It can turn the joy that follows a successful childbirth into sadness. But today, baby gender selection is no longer a serious issue in marriage because there are various methods through which one can determine the gender of their babies. The use of selection kits has remained one of the methods used today for gender selection.
              What is sex selection kit?
Sex selection kits are home kits that are capable of altering the conditions around the sperm or ovum so that the vaginal tract and movement of the sperm to the oviduct will favor either the girl producing sperm which bears the X chromosome or the boy producing sperm which bears Y chromosome.
There are about 6 different types of sex selection kits that are being sold in the market today. They can also be found via the internet. The makers of these kits had claimed 96 percent success rate. However, some medical experts have rebuffed their claims saying that it is not founded on any scientific evidence or research.
The sex selection kits are based on the Shettles method of sex selection. According to this method, couple that wants to have baby girl should have sex two to three days before ovulation while couple that wants to have a male baby should have sex when the woman is ovulating. This method is based on the fact that male producing sperm swims faster but does not last longer while female producing sperm lasts longer but does not swim fast.
The content of the sex selection kit
The sex selection kits normally comes with a thermometer, herbal extracts, vitamins, ovulation predictor test sticks and douches that are gender specific. Each of the contents of the kit has its function. A woman using this method is supposed to master her cycle and be able to tell when she is ovulating, otherwise she will not achieve any success using this method. So, the success depends on the knowledge of the ovulation day.
              How to use the kit
Use the ovulation predictor test sticks and thermometer in the kit to track your cycle in order to determine your ovulation period. Take vitamins and herbal extracts as instructed in order to improve your luck of getting what you want. Sexual intercourse should be in accordance with the Shettles method. With the douches, you will alter the environment of the vaginal tract to favor the sperm type of the gender you want.
              Advantages
              • It is noninvasive method which does not require any hospital visit.
              • It does not interfere with daily routine of the user.
              Cons
              • It is not as affordable as other natural methods of baby sex selection
              • The claimed success rate is doubtable

                  Earning Money by Writing Articles

                  Posted: 11 Oct 2013 05:04 AM PDT

Article writing is one of the commonest ways through which one can earn enough money via the internet. Indeed, many people are living a decent life by writing articles and selling them to people that have a need for them. Article writing does not require you to follow any special course in the university or to go for any training. Though some people have writing skills more than others, writing is an act that comes with education. Any educated person can do some writing, though not everybody has flare for it. If you have flare for writing and you are looking for a way to make money via the internet, you should start writing now in order to earn a living from it.

However, online article writing is not anything goes. It has its own rubrics. If you are writing online articles, you should follow those rubrics. The rules that you must abide by in online writing include the following:

                  Write original and unique article

Online articles are not the same thing as classroom work or any other type of writing where originality is not so much emphasize. Originality and uniqueness are very important in online writing. You are expected to source for information online. However, you are not expected to copy your source materials. Source materials are only meant to guide you to write error and informative article. In other words, you are expected to read your source materials, understand them and then write new article from what you have read and understood. Google and other search engines punish websites that have duplicate content. So, nobody will pay for copied work. There are online software applications like copyscape.com that can spot out copied material. So, there is no escape route except to write unique articles.

                  Good grammar is a must

Online articles can be written in many languages. It all depends on the language of the targeted audience of the person that wants to buy your article or the site that you are publishing the article in. You should have a full grasp of the grammar of the language you are writing in. Internet users do not have time to waste on poorly written articles. In other words, you should not confuse your readers with poor grammar. Avoid the use of high sounding words because the articles are not only for the academicians.

                  Informative article

Your article should be highly informative and sensible. Articles that are full of fluffs are like bad markets and so buyers will ignore them. Therefore, it is not only grammar that matters but also the content of your article.

Write according to instructions of your buyer

Online articles are like products put up for sales. Each buyer is interested in particular features and so they go for products that meet their needs. The same thing applies in online article. Each buyer has formats and so you must write the article according to the formats otherwise it will not be accepted or paid for. If you are posting the article in an online article directory, then you have to follow the editorial guidelines of the directory.

                  Go straight to the point

People don’t have time waste online. So, hit the nail at head in your article and don’t beating about the bush.

These are some of the rules to follow if you want to write online articles.

                  Complications of Pregnancy

                  Posted: 11 Oct 2013 05:01 AM PDT

There are certain health conditions that normally occur during pregnancy. These health problems are known as pregnancy complications. The pregnancy complication can affect the pregnant woman or the foetus in the womb. It is also possible for some pregnancy complications to affect both the pregnant woman and the unborn baby. So, if you are experiencing any of these complications, you have to seek medical attention. There are always acceptable medical practices through which any of these medical complications can be handled.

                  Precaution to take

It is important that you explain to your doctor your medical history especially if you are having any health problems before pregnancy. This is because some of the medications for certain illnesses are not good for pregnant woman. So, if you are looking to get pregnant, you have to meet with your doctor for medical advice especially if you have any medical complication in the past.

Some of the illnesses that can affect pregnancy include:

                  ·         high blood pressure

                  ·         eating disorders

                  ·         asthma

                  ·         migraine

                  ·         diabetes

                  ·         HIV

                  ·         depression

                  ·         overweight and obesity

                  ·         thyroid disease

                  ·         sexually transmitted infections

                  ·         uterine fibroids

                  Pregnancy health problems

Anemia: this normally occurs when there is insufficient number of healthy red blood cells. It causes a pregnant woman to look pale and feel tired and week always. It can also cause shortness of breath and feeling of fainting. Anemia during pregnancy is treatable. Doctors normally recommend iron and folic acid supplements.

Depression: it refers to the feeling of intense sadness during pregnancy. The symptoms of depression include change in appetite, extreme sadness, thought of harming the baby or oneself, irritability and helplessness. Depression during pregnancy can be handled in many ways including therapy, medications and support groups.

Ectopic pregnancy: this occurs when implantation of the fertilized egg takes place outside the womb. There are medications that can be used to handle that. It can also be treated via surgical procedures. Some of the symptoms of ectopic pregnancy include abdominal pain, feeling dizzy or faint, vaginal bleeding and should pain.

Fetal problems: this refers to health problems such as heart problems and poor growth that affect the foetus. The baby’s health is monitored through several tests. The results of these tests will determine the right treatment to be given to baby via the mother. Such fetal problem can make the unborn baby to move less than normal.

Other health complications occurring during pregnancy include:

                  ·         gestation diabetes

                  ·         miscarriage

                  ·         high blood pressure relating to pregnancy

                  ·         placenta previa

                  ·         placental abruption

                  ·         preterm labor

                  ·         preeclampsia

                  ·         infection during pregnancy

There are certain infections that may occur during pregnancy. Though the baby during pregnancy is protected from a lot of illness, some of these infections can also affect the unborn baby as well as the mother. Below are some of infections that may occur during pregnancy.

                  ·         Bacterial vaginosis

                  ·         Cytomegalovirus

                  ·         Group B strep (GBS)

                  ·         Influenza

                  ·         Hepatitis B virus

                  ·         Sexually transmitted infection

                  ·         Listeriosis

                  ·         Parvovirus B19 (fifth disease)

                  ·         Yeast infection

                  ·         Toxoplasmosis

                  ·         Urinary tract infection

If you are pregnant, you should always take your hospital visit serious. It is a veritable means of detecting these illnesses on time.

How to Know When You Are Pregnant

                    Posted: 12 Oct 2013 07:07 AM PDT

Experience has shown that some women do not know when they are pregnant until their belly started protruding out. The only visible sign of pregnancy for such women is protruding belly. This is only one of the signs of pregnancy and it is almost the last signs of pregnancy. There are other symptoms and signs of pregnancy that show a strong possibility of a woman being pregnant. However, pregnancy test remains the best way of finding out whether you are pregnant or not. You should go for pregnancy test if you are experiencing any of these symptoms and signs.

                    Spotting and cramping

Spotting and cramping are among the earliest signs and symptoms of pregnancy. A woman will experience bleeding and sometimes cramping which are similar to the bleeding and cramping experienced during monthly period. This is why most women confused it with their monthly period flow and cramping. The spotting and cramping occurs from 6 to 12 days after fertilization of egg. It occurs as result of implantation of the fertilized egg to the wall of the womb or uterus. This is why it is called implantation bleeding. Implantation bleeding may be accompanied by milky discharge from the vagina as a result of the thickening of the wall of vagina. It does not require any medical attention because it is harmless.

                    Breast enlargement

Conception causes some hormonal changes in women. Increase in the level of hormone after conception can also cause some changes in a woman’s breast making it to become enlarged, tingly and sore. The breast may become tender and fuller when it is touched. The areola becomes darker. These changes normally occur a week or two after conception. However, there are other factors that may cause similar changes in a woman’s breast.

                    Fatigue

Just one week after conception, most women will start feeling too tired to carry out their daily routine. This is normally caused by increase in the level of progesterone. There are other factors that may cause such fatigue. Some of these factors include a boost in blood production, decrease in the level of blood sugar and hypotension.

                    Nausea and early morning sickness

Pregnant women normally suffer from nausea and early morning sickness. However, they are not experienced by every woman. Though the nausea normally occurs in the morning hour, it can also occur at any time during the day. This happens when the woman’s emptying of the stomach is slowed down by hormone levels.

Craving and aversion for some foods

Pregnancy can cause some women to crave for certain food especially some foods they were not used to eating before. It can also make them to have aversion for certain foods especially their favorite foods. This is also caused by hormonal changes. The craving and aversion as well as the nausea for some food can last throughout the gestation period.
