Dear Colleagues,

Greetings from the FMS Department!

In observance of World Environment Day 2026, themed around Climate Change with a special focus on Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), the FMS Department is organizing an E-waste Awareness and Collection Campaign, from 25th May to 29th May 2026 in NIFT Mumbai Campus

The campaign aims to create awareness about the growing environmental concerns associated with improper disposal of electronic waste and to encourage responsible collection & disposal of it.

In today’s digital age, unused and discarded electronic items such as old mobile phones, chargers, cables, earphones, batteries, and similar gadgets often remain stored in homes and workplaces, eventually contributing to environmental pollution and health hazards when disposed of irresponsibly.

Through this initiative, we seek to promote conscious consumption, responsible disposal practices aligned with the vision of Mission LiFE.

Objectives of the Campaign:

  • To raise awareness about the environmental impact of e-waste.
  • To encourage responsible disposal of electronic waste
  • To promote collective participation towards environmental protection.

Activities Planned:

  • E-waste awareness sessions and information dissemination.
  • Collection of unused or non-functional electronic items.
  • Display of educational material related to the above campaign.

All the colleagues (faculty members, staff, officers) are requested to actively participate in the drive by contributing eligible e-waste items and spreading awareness further down the line.

Let us come together to adopt environmentally responsible habits and contribute towards a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.

To start with this campaign, an E-Waste Collection Box will be placed at the NIFT Reception.

Warm regards,

Dr. Tanmay Kandekar & Sachin Bhatnagar

Good morning everyone,

As we observe World Environment Day 2026, and our campaign on “Clean your Drawers; E-waste Awareness & Collection Drive” it reminds us that sustainability begins with responsible everyday actions.

India is among the world’s fastest-growing generators of electronic waste due to rapid digitalization and increasing technology consumption. According to recent recommendations by NITI Aayog, advancing a circular economy for e-waste is now a national priority, not only for environmental protection but also for resource security and sustainable growth.

This report can be accessed through the link below.

https://www.niti.gov.in/sites/default/files/2026-01/Advancing-Circular-Economy-of-Waste-Electronic-and-Electrical-Equipment-Ewaste-and-Lithium-Ion-Batteries-in-India.pdf

This report highlights that valuable materials such as lithium, copper, nickel, and rare earth metals can be recovered through responsible recycling, reducing dependence on imported resources.

As an institution, NIFT has an important role in promoting conscious consumption, repair culture, reuse, and responsible disposal practices.

We urge everyone to actively participate in this drive and adopt sustainable habits that contribute toward a cleaner and circular future.

Thank you.

regards

Dr. Tanmay Kandekar & Sachin Bhatnagar
