Dear GESL Staff Facilitators and Communications Reps,

We will be having Service-Learning Day for GESL Groups to showcase their projects. All GESL groups who have completed their GESL projects will take part.

Service-Learning Day will be held on 21th September 2010 (Tuesday), 2.30am – 4.30pm. Classes will be cancelled on 21st September from 2.30am – 4.30pm for all PGDE (Sec/JC), Jan 2010 intake student teachers to facilitate full participation by GESL groups. There will also be a tea reception for all.

Show & Tell by GESL Groups

The Show & Tell will be in the form of an exhibition where groups will put up their exhibits which best explain/convey to the audience what their project is about. GESL Groups are required to produce a printed A1 size poster exhibit which should include points in the following format:

1.    Project Title

2.    Community Partner (Organisation/s your group has worked with)

3.    Project Objectives, including both a) service goals, and b) learning goals

4.    Project Description

5.    Project Reflections (What we learnt/ Project Takeaways)

The above will effectively carry across the message of what the project is about to your audience. In addition, you may also show a slideshow of your project on a laptop at your booth (optional). Note that laptops are not available for loan and you will need to provide your own, fully charged.

Presentation

Selected groups will have the honour to present their projects to our Guest-of Honour (GOH), Professor R. Shumer from the University of Minnesota, and NIE community at the LT; you will be hearing from us if your group has been chosen to do a presentation. The GOH will be touring the booths after the presentations at the LT. We will be notifying you of the location of your booth and the programme for the day when details are finalized.

Setup & Tending of Booths

The booths will be located outside LT 1. Each group will be given 1 panel, 1 table and 2 chairs at their booth. Each panel will measure 1m by 2.4m (L X H). The panel will look roughly like the attachment (note that we will only be providing the panel board behind, the booth will not look like the booth in the photo). Exhibits can be secured onto the panel board using mounting tape or blu tack. Please bring your own scissors, blu tack, mounting tape, etc, and a table cloth to dress up your booth.

Details regarding the exact setup & dismantle time for booths will be announced in a separate email. Booths shall be ready by 9am on 21 September 2010. If you intend to sell merchandise from the organisation that you are serving, you may do so but please write in to us in advance for approval.

Each group will nominate at least two members to tend their booth at any one time from 9am to 6pm on 21 September. The whole group need not be present at the same time but needs to ensure that the booth will be tended to for the whole duration of the exhibition. Group members other than those tending the booths will be required to attend the sharing in LT 1 from 2.30 to 4pm. Attendance is mandatory.

GESL Seed Money Claims

You may make use of the surplus from your $100 seed money from NIE to purchase materials for the exhibition. If you wish to make a claim for your seed money, please submit the receipts to the Programmes and Student Development office at NIE2-03-02A anytime from 30 August 2010 to 15 October 2010. Please note that submission for claims made after this date will not be entertained.
