The price of an EpiPen two-pack has surged to more than $600 in the U.S., sparking a political outcry. While the manufacturer, Mylan NV, says it takes home about $274, in the U.K. a similar pair of injectors costs the state-funded National Health Service 53 pounds ($69). The numbers highlight the stark differences in the way drugs are priced in the U.S. and Britain, where the government negotiates with pharmaceutical companies to limit costs.

Some of the pressure stems from competition. While the EpiPen in Britain vies with Jext and at least one other product called Emerade from Valeant, the Mylan shots have faced a lack of rivals across the Atlantic as competitors suffered setbacks.

In the U.K., no patient would be shut out and unable to get an auto-injector because of price, said Amena Warner, head of clinical services at Allergy UK, a non-profit group. Prescriptions are free for children and students under 18, and most adults are charged 8.40 pounds.

About 70 guests and Fermilab employees had gathered to break ground for the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) construction project when meteorological hell broke loose in the form of a howling Midwest thunderstorm.

Fortunately, no tunnel has to be constructed between Fermilab and Soudan, since neutrinos can easily traverse the earth. As a matter of fact, most of the neutrino beam will also traverse the two MINOS detectors without leaving a trace. Only one of a million million neutrinos will leave a signal in either one of the detectors.

Knowing that any underground construction is subject to surprises regarding the geological conditions found when excavation actually takes place, Bogert is aware that he and his co-workers still have a challenging time ahead.

So far the excavation for the NuMI project is on schedule. In March, DOE gave notice to proceed. Employees of the S.A. Healy Company, the subcontractor chosen to carry out the underground work, started working. The first step is to construct the access shaft of the NuMI target hall. Digging through the soil has been completed, and Healy has maintained their schedule to date.

The first blasting of rock at the target shaft at a depth of 66 feet was scheduled to take place at the same time as the groundbreaking ceremony at the detector shaft, with the two events a safe distance of about 3000 feet apart. The extreme weather forced a delay in blasting, and sent the groundbreakers to Wilson Hall where they used gold-toned shovels to turn over soil in a planter.

Control Lubrication, a Yorkshire-based system integrator specializing inlubrication systems for machinery in heavy duty industries, is using AS-interface (actuator sensor interface) to network proximity switches, zonevalves, pressure switches, flow monitors and a mobile plug-in reset push buttonsin some of the toughest environments you could imagine.

To do this effectively by manual means was impossible due to the high levelsof salt in the atmosphere and the working environment of up to 408C. Instead, acentralized dual line lubrication (DLL) system was used.

The DLL system uses two grease lines to operate the grease injectors. Using adivider valve, the pump pressurizes one line forcing grease into one side of theinjector, this causes a piston inside the injector to move and dispense ameasured amount of grease from the other side of the piston. The movement ofthis piston actuates a switch confirming its operation.

When all the injectors on the system have been actuated, the line pressurerises to a switching point and stops the pump. After a set period of time thepump is started again, the diverter valve switches to line two and the pressurein the line forces all the pistons back, dispensing grease from the other sideof the piston and so on. If any one of the switches is not activated an alarm isset to alert maintenance personnel. lf for any reason a bearing did not receivethe required grease, the control system gives out an alarm message stating whichlubrication device was at fault.

An AS-interface network designed and installed by Controlled Lubricationconsisting of a range of pneumatic modules, a PLC and HMI supplied by LCautomation was installed to provide the feedback from each lubrication device.AS- interface is a highly efficient single cable networking alternative to thehard wiring of field devices. It is extremely simple to install and producessavings in wiring installation time and costs.

In 2005, the lubrication system was extended to feed the vibro motors on thehoppers, which required grease every four hours. An AS-interface air module wasused to control a pneumatic zone valve to not only control the supply of grease,but also to receive an input from the grease confirmation switch.

The system is now at AS-interface's 100m network limit. At present the systemdoes not cover all the critical bearings, however, Control Lubrication areconfident that if these needed to be connected they could be without the needfor repeaters or line extenders.

On the left is the injector plate for the liquid oxidising agent that on injection is atomised and vapourised. The injector has to remain sealed for both physical states. The oxidising agent then reacts with the gradually vapourising fuel (grain) in the combustion chamber. Pressure is generated by combustion of the gas mixture, which is transformed into kinetic energy by means of the copper Laval nozzles. And in accordance with the rocket principle produces the thrust of the engine.
