hello,

I just found out the interpreterfriend.com is now not working as of
this early morning and I wonder did they turn off? it was working last
week and now not working or what? I know that David Bar-Tzur has
passed away but I wonder someone else to take over? The domain name is
still good until 2010.

Good day all -

Lynne Wiesman of Signs of Development, and I had offered to maintain the site as a memorial to David.

To my knowledge the family never responded.

What a shame.

It was a great site and both David and The Interpreters Friend website will be missed.

Dwight

I am sorry, there may have been a misunderstanding.

David's Family never agreed to allow us to maintain his web site.

Therefore, we can't do it.

Best to you,

Take heart!

Not all is lost. To begin with:

1, The domain name is still registered to David, and will continue to be until Feb 12 of next year. The server serving up his pages is no longer doing so. Something can be done about that, I bet.

2. Nothing on the internet is truly lost. In this case, the Wayback Machine can help: http://tinyurl.com/terppal

3. I backed up his entire site (all the parts we can see, anyway) the day I heard of his passing. It sits patiently in cold storage, waiting to be thawed for use.

I just off the phone with the domain folks. The first thing we can do is to contact earthlink (the hosting people) and simply make David's payment. Problem solved.

Second, failing that, I can get back to the hosting folks, renew the domain (a  whopping $30) and transfer all files there.

I do have a specific vision for David's work. It has always been there, but the site construction has always been a little haphazard. This was also put together in the EARLY days of the web. I suspect if he had to do it again, he'd do it as a Wiki. So I'm thinking... I want to keep an original version around, both as a tribute to David and his life, and for those of us who are used to his site... but build one more in keeping with today's web, that we can add to as a community, contribute video, etc. Thoughts?

-Dan.

Wow Dan,

You ROCK!  Yes, I agree that David would probably have made it a Wiki.  But I really like the idea of keeping it in its original format as well.

I would be willing to chip in $10.00 to make this happen as long as they are willing to transfer everything over.  Keeping it alive is more important that who does it.  To me at least.

That's a great question - my input on this would be that whoever takes this over be someone who knew David and would always keep his goals and involvement as the primary incentive. Dan would be a great person to do this and I hope this works out.

As Dwight had mentioned, he and I extended the offer but the family has not (or was not at that time) ready to deal with these issues understandably and I have been on the road almost non-stop since then. I am not as concerned with who takes it on just that it is taken on AND hopefully by someone who knew David personal so that it maintains that personal approach to his work! David was never about promoting himself, it was always about the work and this field and I believe Dan could do that justice!

Eric, I applaud your work and perhaps you could link theinterpretersfriend.com website in your work!

Lynne,

Thanks. I hope I can. As to who "owns" the work, that's an issue I'd rather not visit. A lot of it was David's, but he also incorporated others' work (always with permission, of course!) into his site, all in the name of fostering an online community of interpreters. He kept it open, free. and dynamic -- all noble aims worth continuing.

And he never (to my knowledge) griped about the use to which his material was put. The number of "signs for country names" - type workshops out there where charging any fee was, quite frankly, outrageous... I remember sending those interested to the WS a link to TIF (whence the presenter probably got their material anyway) to see if I could get a piece of the action. So far, no takers :-)

The old site should be up by close of business today.

Cheers,

-Dan.

David Bar Tzur made this website. Unfortunately, he died this year. It was a sad surprise to us all.

Okay, I'm at the end of my rope with these clown-punchers.

For some bizarre reason, they are too incompetent to process my Visa card properly, and I'm tired of going between them and my bank trying to get this right. If someone else would like to take up the matter of (a) having the domain name transferred to them (or me!) and (b) securing hosting so I can upload and maintain this site, please feel free to contact me. These guys are:

Domain Name Registration
2316 Delaware Ave Suite #266
Buffalo NY,   14216-2687    US
866-434-0212 xt 249

If you call them, tell them you're moving the domain name to you (there's a form involved), extending registration ($30) and getting "premium hosting" ($10).

If I could use another outfit, I would, but most won't touch this without conferring with David's estate, which could take forever. This is the "easiest" way.

For someone else. My time is worth considerably more than $40 an hour, and for the amount of time (= money) I wasted on this, I could have FLOWN to Buffalo and paid them cash.

Exasperated,

-Dan.

May I announce to the local Yahoo group that this website will be maintained?

I thank you all for continuing this incredible resource!

Yes you can - yes it will. It'll take about 24 hours, though.

-Dan.
