It seems that ne maps the keysim for my backspace key to the del_char command. Despite the fact that I pass it a valid .keys file re-assigning backspace to where the backspace key is usually mapped. A more pressing annoyance however, is that it only accepts a .keys file if I pass it as an argument while in the folder with it. I can't pass the path to the .keys file at all. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

It's a common problem--usually just some configuration mismatch. I wrote a mini-HOWTO on the issue.

For the other problem, please provide a reproducible report.

Ciao,

PS: The fact that you haven't given any information on platform, operating system, terminal, etc. won't help.

There is a bug with ne Rubout key on OS X.
Fix it that way: in the file
~/.ne/.keys
 add this line:

 KEY 7F Backspace
