Hi GLOWer’s!

So several of us are set to meet next Friday, March 16th in the office
to work on the PCPP application for Camp GLOW. In order for our
meeting to be a success, Id love if the whole GLOW committee could
help us think about the following things:

1- Come with 3 goals that you have for Camp GLOW. This will be helpful
as we start to draft the application.

2- Think about organizations you are familiar with in your site that
we might be able to partner with for the camp.

3- Also, to help get funding for volunteer travel expenses and such,
Greg recommended involving Nicaraguan counterparts. Is there someone
in your community that you think would be a valuable addition to the
camp? A strong woman or young adult leader that could help us give
sessions or be a counselor? I think we should shoot to have at least
10 community counterparts at Camp GLOW.

4- How should we choose campers? We will just be choosing youth from
communities of GUIA members? What will applications look like? Essays,
short answer questions, or will it be on a referral basis?

5- The PCPP application requests volunteers help in identifying
possible donors. If you have a family member or friend that you know
would be interested in donating to help support Camp GLOW please bring
their names and addresses so we can include them in the application.

I have attached the PCPP application form and a sample application
that was submitted on behalf of a GLOW camp in Burkina Faso. Please
make yourself familiar with both.

We're hoping to get a good start on the application as I dont know
when else we'll be able to get together. All your feedback will be a
great help! Thanks ahead of time for your work! Hope all is well in
site!

Peace out,
Alison

Hey GLOW committee!

Alright, my week is crazy busy, so this will probably be the only time I can give my feedback, so if you have a question or whatever just call me.

1.) 3 goals...  1 - That (80?) teen girls leave capacitadas in the value of and connection between self esteem and decision-making skills.
2 - That (80) teen girls leave with a strong understanding of unhealthy/abusive/controlling and healthy relationships.
3 - erg, I'm out.

2.) I'm moving the Matagalpa, and unfortunately I'll be taking my month off from mid-April through mid-May, so I don't think I'll be able to connect with an organization enough to include them in camp.  Maybe next year...

3.) From San Rafael, I have an awesome young female counterpart named Carmen Rizo who would be shmermazing.  I bet I could get her on board, but it might be kind of weird since I'm not in San Rafael for much longer, so let's call her a back-up, who we could probably involve if necessary.

4.) I vote have youth turn in applications that we write out with short answer questions.  Turning in the application is that little extra hoop they have to jump through, and it helps weed out those who aren't actually that interested.

That's all I've got.  Let me know if you need anything from me.

Hey Alison,

I really apologize for being out of touch. I was busily working on the
University Fair which turned out to be a great success. Count me in
for anything that you need at this point. Hopefully my experience with
the event on the island can help with the planning of the camp as
well. What time were you all planning on meeting the 16th? I can make
morning/mid day meetings.

Saludos,

Hi All!

Wanted to clear up my last email. At our GUIA retreat, Gabe, Kate,
Hanna, Cassie and myself volunteered to head up the PCPP application
writing process. The five of us have planned to meet this Friday in
Managua to start the application. No one else is expected to come,
but of course if youd like to, you´d be welcome! But please let me
know so I can ask Flor to find embassy stays for those coming from far
out. Sorry about the confusion!! If you have time please respond to
the prompts provided in the first email which will help us along with
the process.

Thanks so much! Goooooooooooooooooooooo GUIA!

Do we have a time when we want to start on friday? Let's all hope that the road block in Sebaco is gone by friday.

Hey!

I don't think the roadblock will be gone by Friday, but please give me a call to tell me how everything goes this Friday! I will make sure to have service Friday all day and Saturday morning.

Good luck! I'll forward my responses to your prompts ASAP.

Take care,
Julie

ps. See you next Friday, March 23, in Matagalpa! :)

It wont be gone but it easy to get around it. You just walk through sebeco and then there are buses on the other side. My friend just passed through from Managua to esteli.  Also were we planing on having a meeting on Friday march 23rd?

Hey again,

Sorry so many emails. Here are some thoughts for the application:

Counterpart:

I have a wonderful counterpart teacher, Marjorie Garcia, who would be an awesome speaker, facilitator, mentor, or counselor at this camp.

Goals:

  1. To help promote strong, empowered young women in a culture with a strong influence of machismo.
  2. Girls walk away with leadership skills that they are able teach to their peers.
  3. Teach girls to have a voice and an confidence in their everyday lives.

Counterpart:

I have a wonderful counterpart teacher, Marjorie Garcia, who would be an awesome speaker, facilitator, mentor, or counselor at this camp.

Campers:

Choose from all PCV communities, and make an application with short answers, at least one essay and parental sign off. I think recommendations are a great idea, but in come communities, recommendations will be hard to come by, and the recommendations may not be turned in on time.

Good luck, guys!

Hey guys,

Here are my responses:

1. Three Goals:

--To have a great, fun, well-run camp. To keep in mind that this is our first year and that we are laying the foundation for future GLOW camps to come. :)
--To do a follow-up evaluation (survey, interviews, etc.) 6 months or so after the camp to see if and how the girls have benefited from attending.
--To have the campers leave the event feeling empowered and motivated to be strong-thinking, independent girls.

2. Partner Organizations
I work with Casa de la Mujer here in Camoapa. The staff is wonderful and I know they would want to help out in some way. The organization barely has any money to contribute, but they might be able to help out in terms of guest speakers, activity ideas, etc.

3. Nica Counterparts
There's a lady named Blanca who works at Casa de la Mujer. She's strong-willed, funny, and dynamic, and would definitely be an asset to the camp.

4. Choosing Campers

I like the idea of a short application ("Why do you want to participate in the camp?" "What do you hope to get out of the camp?" etc.) I think how Laurie Pickard did it with the youth camp was good - any Volunteer can recruit campers. It would extend it to more students and it would ensure that we have enough campers.

5. Possible Donors
Should be able to think of a few people, I'll bring these names to the meeting tomorrow.

See you guys tomorrow at noon!

Cassie

Hey guys,

1. Three Goals:

--to the lay groundwork to make this camp sustainable
to provide information on womens health, teenager pregnancy and STI
For each camper to leave with a new found focus and long term perspective on her life goals

2. Partner Organizations  Nica Counterparts
I work with an organization Senda de Libertidad a lot here in Dario. They have two women counterparts who are quite good and would love to come. One of them is going to PDM with my site mate and helped teach the health portion of a summer camp. I also work with the organization Jovenes Para Jovenes which has an active student leadership, it is more male heavy. I am in contact with a student from Red del Norte para Mujeres, but their office is in Maltagalpa, so I am still ironing that out. I also know a number of doctors at the NGO Prosalud that could provide a charla.

4. Choosing Campers

I like the ideas so far also maybe trying to get a camper deposit that they will get for showing up.
5. Possible Donors
I have some friends who are interested and will ask my parents if they can give me some friends.

Hey there - here´s what i´ve got:

1. Goals:
- That Camp GLOW will be a safe, fun, comfortable environment for all of the campers to learn more about themselves, about female health, machismo, etc from the strong female leaders in attendance.
-That the girls leave feeling like empowered individuals, inspired to tell other girls in their communities about their experience.
-That the girls have a chance to share experiences with each other and form a network of strong females in various departments of the country (perhaps help set-up a pen-pal type program for those interested in keepeing in contact and support each other after camp?).

2. Counterparts:  There is a young doctor on social service in Mozonte, Aileen, who I think would be a great help especially if we do some charlas about female health.  Also, there is a CEPS tech, Helen, who would be an excellent, energenic counselor.  She lives in Jalapa so we havent been in contact for a while, but when she is in my community again I´ll be mentioning GLOW.

3. Partner Organizations: I work alot with CEPS and like their work/methodology, but where I live there are just guys.
Also, Mi Familia may be good to collaborate with themes like machismo...

4. Chosing Campers:  I also like the idea of opening up the apps to girls from wherever there are volunteers..  and I like the use of a short answr app as a way to get the girls thinking about camp before they come and making sure they´re interested.

5. Donors: Check. plenty of people interested in what PCVs are doing in Nicaragua.

Take care all and happy meeting tomorrow!
-Angie

Hey all!

Here are some ideas:

1-  Goals- Camp GLOW will provide young women with opportunities to gain and exchange  information in regards to health, education, personal relationships, and personal finance issues.  Camp GLOW will empower participants in goal-setting and decision-making . Camp GLOW will inspire and encourage participants to create supportive and empowering social networks with other young women as well as taking leadership roles in those groups.

2-  Organizations- We have several organizations in my site that work with women and in particular young women. However, I am not very familiar with all the services they provide. I do know that the Casa Juvenil works with young women and men specifically in  campaigns against machismo. Also, we have a Casa de la Mujer and a Casa Materna that could potentially offer some support.

3-     Counterparts- I know a couple young women that were participants in the camp I had recently. It seems as if they have had trainings and charlas prior to me meeting them. They have strong leadership skills and I know a lot about the topics. I thought that in the future I could approach them about starting a girls club or running future girls camps in town. Also, there is a teacher here who is young, energetic, and works with youth already. She could be a great counterpart.

4-    Choosing Campers- I think applications are definitely the best way to go. They weed out the people that are semi-interested and then those that actually fill it out and turn it in feel invested in the process. I can attach the application that was used at the camp in my site. We also used parent letters for permission.

5-   PCPP donors- I am sorry. I can't think of anybody off the top of my head except my family. I can email you their addresses over the weekend if that's okay. I'm just going to check with them. Also, I will keep thinking about it and send you more names when they come to mind.

Good luck with your meeting!

Best,
liz
