Hi GLOWers!
First and foremost, thank you for such a productive meeting on Saturday! I was so impressed with how fast we got things done and I confident that we are on track for a successful camp. Below are my notes from the meeting along with some reminders and deadlines that we should all keep in mind.
1. Community Partner- Robyn will be talking with Grupo Venancia this week to see if they (specifically Paz Arauz) will be willing to serve as community partners as we plan and look for funds for Camp GLOW. If Grupo Venancia is not able to serve as partners, Gabe will talk to Senda de Libertad. Cassie will send the completed PCPP application to Robyn by August 10, so that Robyn and Grupo Venancia can review the application and sign off on it before it is due in Managua on the 15th.
2. Community Counterparts- We decided as a group that we wanted to involve as many community counterparts as possible. These counterparts will serve as counselors and also help in facilitating the sessions during camp. It would be great if we could all look to bring at least one counterpart. Gabe, Cassie, and Kate committed to bringing 2 counterparts each. Yay and thanks to them!
3. Sessions- Camp GLOW will promote girls empowerment and foster a collective identity and a spirit of teambuilding among participants. Satuday we will hold two sessions with an overarching theme of “Taking charge of myself”. The sessions will focus on “Self-esteem and Identity” and “Decision Making and Healthy Choices”. Sunday, the theme will be “Taking charge of my Future”. The sessions will focus on “Leadership” and “Goal Setting and Future Planning”. Saturday night we will also have a session on “Violence against Women” and Sunday afternoon the girls will participate in a ropes course available at Vida Joven. See the tentative agenda attached for more information about the sessions and who will be responsible for coordinating them.
4. Roles w/in the Planning Committee-
· Scheduler- Alison
· Fundraiser- Gabe
· Supply Officer- Noelle
· Camp Liaison- Hannah
· Photographer- Robyn
· Application Officer- Angie
· Community Liaison- Robyn
· PCPP responsible- Cassie
For those of you who weren’t at the meeting please let us know how you would like to during this pre-planning period and during the camp itself. Gabe if you could please send out the descriptions of each of these positions so we are all clear on what we should be doing.
5. Call for Applications- Due to the location of the camp and logistical realities of planning, we have decided that this Camp GLOW will only be open to girls who live in communities in the departments of Jinotega, Esteli, Matagalpa, Ocotal, Boaco, and Nueva Segovia. We will send out an open call for applications for volunteers in these departments to nominate participants. We didn’t discuss this at the meeting but Im also going to say that Noelle and Liz are welcome to bring kids from their communities. We just need to know transportation costs from your site to Matagalpa (+ 15 cords to Vida Joven).
6. Budget- Our goal is to get the PCPP application in by August 15. In order for this to happen we need to confirm the budget, and ensure that we have the 25% community contribution covered. Right now we are counting on getting the community contribution from supplies, counterpart participation, snacks, and $100 cord contribution from each camper towards his/her transportation to camp.
· Hannah-will check with Vida Joven to see if they can donate the conference rooms
· Kate-will look for condom donations through MINSA for the Health Choices charla.
They will both be in touch with CASSIE regarding what they find out.
7. Tentative Deadlines-
· 15 Aug- PCPP Application submitted to Managua Office
· September-October- PCPP Application up, Fundraising from friends in the states
· October-November- Call for applications from campers
· December- January- Invitations to campers
· February- Camp GLOW!
8. TO-DO-
· Send an address of a community group, family, NGO, school, church, someone who you know will be interested in donating to this project to Cassie ASAP. These referrals will be contacted by Washington in order to see if they are interested in donating to Camp GLOW.
· Start talking to friends and family in the states about the project. Let them know when the project goes online so that they can donate.
· Identify a community counterpart that would be interested in attending camp and that could ideally help lead some charlas. (We are saying women only as they will have to spend the night in the cabins with the girls).
· Be on the lookout for news from Noelle on how we can help with fundraising supplies for camp.
· GET PUMPED!
Hope everyone’s well! Please get your addresses to Cassie ASAP.
GRACIAS!
