The top Journey songs demonstrate quite clearly how the band, one of the early progenitors of what rock critics like to dismiss as "arena rock," achieved such popularity in the '70s and '80s.

One of the earliest Journey songs to find traction at rock radio, "Wheel in the Sky" began as a poem titled "Wheels in My Mind" by Diane Valory, the wife of Journey bassist Ross Valory. When singer Robert Fleischman heard it, he appropriated it for a lyric that was juxtaposed against a hard rock riff from Schon. When Journey brought in Steve Perry to replace Fleischman, he put his signature vocal stamp on the track, undeniably making it one of the Top 10 Journey Songs

Cain wrote the wistful piano-based ballad "Faithfully" about the challenges of being on the road while trying to maintain a life with his wife at home. The song's universal sentiment and melodic structure struck such a chord with fans that it landed at No. 12 in the Billboard chart, and it has since gone on to become one of Journey's most recognizable and enduring songs. Ironically, the song has far outlasted the marriage it was written to commemorate, which ended in divorce in 1987.

After hearing the hermit thrush and the american robin, the next two birds I would hear in the morning were the Black-Capped Chickadee, and the Chipping Sparrow. The Black-Capped Chickadee has a two note song and several calls, but it was the two note song that I was responding to, and the bird responded back with the same two notes. The chipping sparrow has two songs and several calls. The songs are long dry trills, one being faster than the other. I was hearing the faster one and he alternated his song with the black-capped chickadee. I began imitating both of them, improvising in between their songs and my imitations.

The result of these efforts was the release of Diane Moser: Birdsongs (Planet Arts Records), and little did I know the resounding effect this would have on critics, music fans, and students. We have had truly wonderful reviews from jazz, contemporary fusion, classical and rock music publications, and even a heavy metal blog! Evidence of the universality of not only music, but of bird song.

Being a music teacher, amongst other things, I am always fascinated by the different themes captured by music, and by the links between music, emotions and memories. Many assume that the main themes in music are emotional ones - love, loss, heartbreak, and so on. Yet journeys also have a very strong connection with music.

Some 'journey songs' fit into this category simply because of their association with travel. There are many songs which are stereotypical 'tavelling songs' from 10 Green Bottles and 99 Bottles Of Beer, to Highway To Hell (AC/DC) and Bat Out Of Hell (Meatloaf). Many of these songs develop their associations when we are children. Songs like 10 Green Bottles, 99 Bottles Of Beer, Old McDonald Had A Farm or On Top Of Old Smokey were particularly popular on car trips in times before car radio and portable tape/CD players. Such songs were necessary to entertain children on long car trips, especially when many of the journeys took far longer than they do today, but even today these songs are still popular with children in cars and buses. Others, like Highway To Hell, are simply classic 'roadtrip' songs, making it onto most lists of classic car songs, and enshrined in many 'roadtrip' movies.

As we get closer to the night Journey finally gets inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, here is a reminder that for every tear-shedding ballad there's a fist-pumping rocker in Journey's arsenal of songs.

The Journey is a leveling system. By playing songs, players earn stars. At different thresholds, players will level up their rank, unlocking new features up to rank 6 and new songs for the Collection up to rank 24. At some ranks, players will also receive other rewards such as a Wishlist Box or Gems.

Former JOURNEY singer Steve Perry has withdrawn his petition to cancel trademark registrations for 20 of the band's songs held by guitarist Neal Schon and keyboard player Jonathan Cain. The songs include some of JOURNEY's most popular singles, such as "Any Way You Want It", "Open Arms" and "Separate Ways".

Turn-by-turn directions for the journey of the song reduce stress for the performer even as they increase clarity and variety for the listener. If the listener gets lost, the journey of the song will be ultimately unsatisfying. Navigating that journey, one "turn" at a time, is a key skill for the singing actor to master.Thoughtful analysis and careful crafting of behavior are strategies that any singing actor can use to make a song a powerful dramatic performance.
