You are invited to this year's Constitutional Reform Conference, convened by the Move to Amend (MTA) coalition, one of nine conferences taking part within this year's Democracy Convention (August 7-11 in Madison, Wisconsin).
The U.S. Constitution provides the basic framework for how our government is structured, and defines the relationship between the federal government, the states, and all people within the United States. Any movement that wants to make systemic and fundamental change in this country --and that takes itself seriously-- must grapple with the fact that the United States is not currently a functioning democratic republic.
Confirmed speakers at the Constitutional Reform Conference already include:
- Ashley Sanders, Peaceful Uprising (Salt Lake City, UT)
- Ben Manski, Liberty Tree Foundation (Madison, WI)
- Daniel Lee (Los Angeles, CA)
- David Cobb, Program on Corporations, Law and Democracy (Eureka, CA)
- Egberto Willies, Coffee Party USA (Kingwood, TX)
- Jerome Scott, co-founder, U.S. Social Forum (Atlanta, GA)
- Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap, Democracy Unlimited (Eureka, CA)
- Laura Bonham (Coalville, UT)
- Leesa "George" Friday, Independent Progressive Politics Network (Gastonia, NC)
- Nancy Price, Alliance for Democracy (Davis, CA)
- Stephen Justino, Attorney at Law (Denver, CO)
Planned conference sessions include:
- Building a Multi-Racial Movement for Constitutional Reform and Democracy
- Introduction to the concepts of "Corporate Personhood" & "Money Equals Speech"
- Should the U.S. Constitution be Completely Rewritten?
- The (Constitutional) Rights Race: An Interactive Experience Contrasting Human Rights and Corporate Rights
- An Article V Constitutional Convention: Could it work?
- Lessons from our (Hidden) Radical Past: The Abolitionists, Seneca Falls, The Populist Uprising, the ERA Struggle
- The Constitution as an Economic/Property Document. Explanation of the history of the Constitution as a document to protect wealth, then ask what is wrong with/missing in it and why we can't simply "restore" democracy back to some original state?
- History of the Bill of Rights. Why was the Bill of Rights a necessary People's Response to the Constitution? What is good about it? What is still missing?
- Under the Radical Past workshop: more in-depth coverage of the radical wing of Revolutionary America and how they are what we are talking about.
- What Does Real Democracy Look Like? A presentation and interactive visioning session about MTA's ultimate goal.
...and more!
The Constitutional Reform Conference at the 2013 Democracy Convention will provide space for attendees to discuss, debate and strategize how to ensure that the growing U.S. democracy movement takes itself seriously enough to attempt to write our political and cultural victories into the governing law of this country.
~ ABOUT THE 2013 DEMOCRACY CONVENTION ~
If you want to strengthen democracy where it matters most ... in our communities, our schools, our workplaces and local economies, our military, our government, our media, our constitution ... you will find something inspiring in Madison this August. Join us at the second national Democracy Convention.
More than one conference, the Democracy Convention houses at least nine conferences under one roof. As the great progressive reformer Fighting Bob La Follette said, "democracy is a life," and "involves constant struggle" in all sectors of society. With the Democracy Convention, we recognize the importance of each of these separate democracy struggles, as well as the need to unite them all in a common, deeply rooted, broad based, movement for democracy.
Every day we learn of new participants in the convention, new conference conveners, new sponsors, and new, incredible speakers and workshop leaders. This will be THE PLACE to go this summer for those committed to winning democracy in the U.S.A.. So:
Thank you, and see you in Madison!
