Tom….
Before you do anything further connect the radio to your computer. Start the programming software you have. Go to CLONE menu and click on INFORMATION. That will pull in and display information on your radio including the Electronic Serial Number and current MAIN and DSP firmware versions. If your MAIN firmware is 4.9 the programming software you have should work. If it is something other than 4.9 you will need a different rev of the programming software. Let me know what you find out.

Hi Paul, and thanks for the input; Here is what I found:
Serial # 28937103127
LMR
IC-F3160 Series
Rev 2.9
Sum $5F32
Option UT-126H
REV: 3.2$F961
I am familiar with Icom programming as we had zillions of IC-F4S Radios at the hospital I used to work at, but they were analog.
Hopefully this info will help determine what is wrong.
Thanks,
Tom K4YAZ
Where did you come about your VHF radio? (was it a railroad radio to begin with?)
Just making sure it is not RR firmware.

I purchased it from a ham in Pasco County; he programed it for me; he said he purchases radios at ham shows, eBay etc. and has sold a lot to railfans since the railroads are migrating to NXDN; of course, he inhibits the transmit function. He was able to program this radio and even has my name on a special bank of channels I requested. He used an old serial cable on an XP machine. I also tried the software on my old XP laptop which has a serial port, but I don’t have that cable; my only cable is USB. I still get the same error message “Illegal Data” when I try to copy what is in the radio to my computer.
Several posts in another NXDN group suggested that I might be able to program the radio from the computer, but I have not tried that as I don’t want to wipe out the programming that is there; I want to copy and save it as I should be able to. Several others said I need to update either the software or the firmware, but then I may have the firmware issue of no wide band for ham use. I personally think that the issue may be the USB cable; if I could find a old serial cable that may be the answer. I certainly want to fix this issue before I purchase a UHF radio for ham use. I would like to get the same model, probably with the keypad; then I could use the batteries and charger that I have. I am hoping to go to Dayton and I am sure I can find one there, but I would like to get this settled before I go, if I do get to go. I could pay the Icom long price, but that will reduce my Dayton funds. I am retired and not working at the present.
Thanks for your help and suggestions.
If this is Railroad firmware it is an older version.
Please send me your email address so I can add you to the Dropbox. That will enable you to download a newer version of firmware.

I am checking into that, but I believe it was a regular model. The ham that sold it to me was able to program it for me to my specs and put my name on a special channel bank. He used an old serial cable and Windows XP. I only have a USB cable which gives me the same error message “illegal data” on Windows 10 or my old XP laptop. I am looking for an old serial cable.
Thanks to everyone for their input.
I may be going to Dayton and I am sure there will be one there, but I would like to get this solved before then and certainly don’t want to get a UHF model for ham use until I get this right.

I have dropbox; uuh...@aol.com
Tom
Yes, by all means please send me the firmware file to dropbox. Again, the firmware is 2.9 and I confirmed with the seller that it is regular firmware, not radio.
