NXDN, like every other digital radio mode, requires the assignment of an Individual ID so your radio can be properly identified.  Having the right ID will insure your radio does not cause conflicts with other NXDN users on the network.

To help make this an orderly process, a numbering schema was development several years ago.  It is based on the U.S. Census Burea's FIPS code system that is assigned to each state.  For example, Florida is assigned a FIPS code of 12.  For a complete list of FIPS codes, go to www.census.gov .

We encourage all Florida NXDN operators to use a "12" series ID on their radio(s).  For example, a valid ID would be 12200 or 12345..  Just as importantly, Talkgroup IDs should also start with "12" (i.e. 1200, 1204, 1210, 1275, 1295, etc.).

What happens if the ID your are using matches the ID of anothr radio on frequency?  Among other things, you will not be able to communicate with the other operator.

Bring your questions about NXDN Radio IDs to the TampaBay NXDN Net this Wednesday evening at 8 PM on TG 1200.

This is broken by design.

There are 2^16 65,536 or 0x10000 ID's in NXDN. There are simply not enough
IDs to have everyone have a unique ID.

using FFnnn where FF is a fips code up to 65, and nnn is a 0-9 code for the
users in that region is broken by design. On a user basis there can only be
1000 users in a given state. If NXDN grows as we hope, some states will
easily exceed 1000 users.

Now say you're in Puerto Rico, the FIPS code is 72, which is >65 and won't
even work in this scheme. USVI too which is 78!

This assumes there are no non-US users of the system. What if there is NXDN
activity in Europe or Australia?

I think simply registering a unique ID makes much more sense. Then the whole
world can best use the 2^16 ID's available and it's likely we'll stay under
this many people using NXDN worldwide. If it grows above this, it's going to
be a whole other issue.

We need a better way IMO.

While we need a better way, this is what we are bound to.
I have expressed my opinion to Japan about this (Yes KENWOOD AND ICOM) and until such time,
The use of the 2^16 is what was cast into stone, because in the business world, find where more
Than 65,000 radios in one single system is used...
Same with DMR, in a business world, same with P25 in a single System.

In due time, the format may change, right now, no.
With a bridged network what are the odds of talking to a like UID in another area?

ALL VALID POINTS, but in Florida, we have no more than 50 or so users.....

My 2 cents, and thanks for the input gents.

You're correct, Evans. It is, admittedly, a flawed system. But short of
having at least an eight digit system, it is what it is. Heck, if every
licensed Ham in Florida had one NXDN radio, we would use up most of the 65K
numbers all by ourselves. Texas, too. And then there is California. This
might be why neither ICOM or Kenwood are actively marketing NXDN to the Ham
community?

Maybe we need to take our lead from all the work-arounds the IT community
has had to endure with IPv4, the numbering system that was supposed to be
the end all in the computer world. Until the NXDN Forum recognizes the
shortcomings of the NXDN numbering schema, maybe the Ham community needs to
develop its own NAT mechanism for NXDN ID numbering. Of course, this would
require more work on the part of software developers to come up with a
real-time ID translation system. But it would be a start.
