Hi everyone,

I work for the Department for Work and Pensions, and we have been doing a lot of work around bereavement. Our user research has ground out user needs around departments and other companies needing to be aware of a death sooner rather than later.

Bereaved people receive awful correspondence about things not being paid that need paid, and also about things that have been paid and need to be paid back. It's stressful for the bereaved person and it costs the tax payer millions in overpaid benefits each year.

At the moment, the process is slow. It can be a week or so after the death before the death is registered and everyone is officially told about it. A lot can happen in a week. Letters can be posted, things can be paid out, things can go into arrears. With the introduction of Medical Examiners in 2018, I thought this might be a good place to start looking at how we can fix this.

If you aren't aware, when medical examiners are introduced in 2018, they will need to review all deaths in the UK. Which means there will need to some sort of system in place where they can be notified of a death and deal with it swiftly, that could hopefully mean everyone else could get access to that information sooner.

The NHS is going to have to deal with notifying Medical Examiners at some point, so it could be good to address how the data can be shared with other departments and companies from the get go =)

Thanks,
Craig

I thought that “Tell Us Once” was working well. Relatives I’ve spoked to have all been impressed.

How would this relate to that?

The Tell Us Once service isn’t available in Northern Ireland or the following local authorities:

Brighton and Hove
Croydon
East Sussex
Eastbourne
Hammersmith and Fulham
Harrow
Hastings
Highland
Lewes
Liverpool
Manchester
Medway
Orkney Islands
Portsmouth
Rother
Salford
Wealden

Hmmmm. Sounds great if you live where it works!

Why aren't these other places using the existing solution?
Cost? Not aware? Some other reason?
