umm... the frequent collocation of NHS Hack Day with things like
#HANDI, #digihealthcon, #digitalshoreditch, incubators etc. This is
very flattering but potentially misleading.

I am not part of HANDI or digital shoreditch etc (they did, without
asking, a lovely re-frame of www.nhshackday.com and we were the
digital shoreditch weekend event until the Cadbury's hack came along).

I'm sure some, or maybe even all of them, will be good things, and
it's cool that the area is exploding, but they're just not my personal
thing (too little time etc) at the moment.

Best, Carl

Hi Carl,

It's not flattering or otherwise.

My universal experience is that if you think you have a good idea one of two
things will be true:

. It a bloody stupid idea; or
. Other people exposed to the same environment are having very similar
ideas

The role of the individual inventor or innovator is much overrated. Sure you
need talent and energy to take an idea and run with it but there are lots of
talented and energetic people out there.

In a commercial environment the trick is to move decisively at the right
time. It is often best not to be first and not to be alone.

In this space we all have our own angles and agendas mine with Handi Health
CIC yours with Open Health Care Uk Ltd but we all make the most progress by
a mixture of competition and cooperation and I think we would both agree
that we need more cooperation than competition, but we need both.

Overtime the community will determine what organisations and structures best
meet it needs and indeed if we are dealing with a community or a market.

For now let's keep having fun, do our own thing and what we can to support
each other. And I'm having more fun than I have had for years.

Hey Ewan

I'm sure there is a way for HANDI feed off the excitement and energy without diluting the essence of what underpins nhshackday. Ie clinically driven dialogue with developers using open source software. We have to remember this or we are lost.

Indeed. I would have used a different term.

Except that you posted to someone else's mailing list with a bold
advert for a competing event that I - for one - found confusing.
Please don't do this (especially don't do it without *asking the list
owner* first!)

(I run several free events and it can be extremely upsetting when
other people try to piggyback off your hard work. For the larger
events, we don't care - we know that most competitors will just fall
by the wayside. For the smaller events, the ones still finding their
feet, it can be a real kick in the teeth)

so in conclusion it's the nhs hack day mailing list so it's about nhs hack day stuff (not handi, digihealth, digishoreditch, ehi skunkworks, ccios, whatever)

I'm sure many people on the list have other stuff they''d like to plug but they don't cos it isn't really polite since it's the nhs hack day list

some people on the list seem not to get this, it probably doesn't serve their interest (it can look like spam), and it'd be nice if they stopped :-)

if dying to share stuff with list people I suggest putting up a page on the wiki for stuff that isn't nhs hack day stuff but that might be of interest to nhs hack day people so that then they can go and look if they like

Good solution. Skunkworks is just an annual showcase for ehealth open source at Ehi Live. So a wiki entry would be great

cool, I've added your suggestion

unmoderated (anyone can edit) list of stuff that is not NHS Hack Day but that whoever adds it feels might be of interest to go here:
http://wiki.nhshackday.com/wiki/NotNHSHackDay

folk interested in unsolicited event recommendation can check it

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to apologise if any of you felt it was inappropriate for me to join and comment in this group.

<<frequent collocation of NHS Hack Day with things like
#HANDI, #digihealthcon, #digitalshoreditch, incubators etc. This is
very flattering but potentially misleading.>>
It hasn't been to flatter, I just thought we might have some common ground and be interested in each other's projects.

<<in conclusion it's the nhs hack day mailing list so it's about nhs hack day stuff (not handi, digihealth, digishoreditch, ehi skunkworks, ccios, whatever)>>
I have very much felt a sense of cameraderie with you guys at the #NHSHackday, and genuinely thought you would be interested to know about other events with similar ethics going on around the country. So I'm sorry if this has been misunderstood. I guess I'm with Ewan,
<< Other people exposed to the same environment are having very similar
ideas>>
and I believe that we can offer each other support and encouragement as fellow travellers.

I certainly see enough differences in our approaches to feel confident we each have a complementary place in this emerging field of rapid prototyping of digital health solutions.
I agree that
<<we need more cooperation than competition>>

My motivation for posting, indeed, for getting involved in this area, is in order to try to create a sense of community of people who are working on the same kinds of issues, and who see digital a a way through that can ensure we continue to deliver the best possible care under increasingly difficult financial services.

I'm taking a slightly different tack to you guys, and including patients and carers along with a wide range of clinicians of different disciplines along with the techie folks, all trying to get some workable solutions developed. I'm interested to see how all the various people playing in this space are developing their ideas.

<< putting up a page on the wiki for stuff that isn't nhs hack day stuff but that might be of interest to nhs hack day people so that then they can go and look if they like >>
Thanks for this useful suggestion, I'll post there.

Once more, sorry if it came over that I was wilfully posting on a private thread for the guys who had attended the #NHSHackday. It was unintentional.

Best wishes, and good luck with everything that has come out of #NHSHackday!

Clare,

It's an open forum, any participation that isn't advertising your own event/company would be most welcome - no need to come to the events in person.

We've created a page for stuff that people on the list feel might be of interest to other people on the list but which is off topic here http://wiki.nhshackday.com/wiki/NotNHSHackDay feel free to add details of your event there.

Thanks Carl, that's good to know. I'm still following the group, anyway, because its really interesting! Sorry again for any upset it caused to talk about my own project. Claire

Carl - Not sure if you intended this, but the page is not visible when viewing other wiki pages .
