Hello NHHAW Friends!

For those of you who have recently joined us, welcome! We are looking forward to working with you. And what better way to welcome new member than with a very long email. Here it comes...

First, for those of you who have been recruited without much information: We are a group of students working to organize a week of events from November 12th to 17th at different colleges and universities in and around Baltimore to raise awareness of issues surrounding and related to hunger and homelessness. The week of events will culminate in a Sleep Out in front of City Hall on November 17th to show solidarity and raise public awareness about these issues.

Here are descriptions of the committees and what they will be working on:
  • Outreach Committee
    • Connect with other colleges and universities, service providers who work on issues (even remotely) related to hunger and homelessness, and faith communities for support
    • Insure community voice from those who have or are currently experiencing hunger and/or homelessness is included in the planning of this week
  • Sleep Out Permit and Program Planning Committee
    • Set up meetings with city council members regarding petitions for the Sleep Out and resolution for NHHAW to be recognized by the City
    • Plan details for the Sleep Out on November 17th
  • Public Relations Committee
    • Plan kick-off event of the week
    • Advertise for the Sleep Out and the events on campuses
    • Connect with local and school papers and local and school radio stations to spread the word and help raise awareness
  • Donations and Food Committee
    • Organize and manage donations for the Sleep Out Event
If you would like to be on the list for a certain committee, please let us know by sending an email to NHHAW.B...@gmail.com.

In addition to these committees, students will be working on planning events on their own campuses. You do not need to sign up for one of the committees to be involved. For example, the Sleep Out Permit and Programming Committee needs Baltimore City residents and student groups to sign letters and talk to their city council persons in order to get permission to stay in the park overnight. So please send an email to NHHAW.b...@gmail.com with your representatives name (if you know it) if you live in Baltimore City or if your school is located in the city.  And spread the word to anyone else you know that may be willing to pressure City Council with us.

The next conference call will be Friday, September 21st at 4:00pm. Here is information for the conference call line:
Dial-in Number: (712) 775-7000
Participant Access Code: 974666#
Participant: When prompted, enter the assigned access code, followed by the # key.

We are suggesting that we have large group conference calls every other Friday at 4:00pm and then, on the off weeks, we hope that committees will find time to meet and get things done. Committees, please discuss when you would like to meet next week. You can use the same conference call line, if you wish.

Attached are the minutes from last week's meeting where we defined the committees and the agenda for this Friday's meeting. Please take a look at this ahead of time as we hope the discussion will go quickly if we all know what we are talking about (if that ever happens...).

Thanks for reading to the end! We have just under 2 months until the Sleep Out, so let the work begin!

Peace,
Elizabeth

Note: Responding to this email will send the response to the whole group. If you wish to get in touch with the student organizers, please email NHHAW.B...@gmail.com.
