Greetings!

We are gearing up for National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week 2013 - with the Sleep Out for Housing Justice on November 23rd! We are so excited to begin organizing these events, and want to invite all members of last year's Sleep Out process to join us!

We have begun a fresh email list for 2013 planning. If you would like to be on that email list, please respond to this email so that I may add you. Otherwise, you will not receive emails through this listserv.

I have included the email sent today to all new organizers, in hopes of inspiring you to join us in organizing this year's event. We intend to create something significant that will lead to larger and more impactful change for our neighbors in Baltimore experiencing food and housing insecurity.

I sincerely hope you will be able to join us this year!

Best,

Matt Q.

First, I’d like to welcome all new members to this year’s National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week! Planning this event is an exciting process, and the Sleep Out for Housing Justice is already shaping up to be something awesome and transformative. I am really eager to work more closely with you all in the coming weeks!

There are a few ways to get involved this year, and I will list some options below. For those able to make last Saturday’s meeting, we created working committee groups, and some members have already signed onto those committees – but we need your help with this work! I have attached the committee list below; please reply to this email and let me know if you would like to be added to one of these groups!

Additionally, you or your group may want to explore the following options:

1. Plan an event on your campus or community during the week of November 17-22 to raise awareness about issues of hunger and homelessness.

2. Organize a donation drive.

We have not yet established what our donations will be this year, but winter coats and sleeping bags were given away at last year’s event. If interested, I will give your name to the Donations Committee to keep you informed.

3. Get a group together to attend the Sleep-Out for Housing Justice on November 23, 6pm in front of City Hall!

4. Or, join a committee to help plan the Sleep-Out:

  • Education and Advocacy- Develops educational program for the Sleep-Out and organizes all related      political advocacy, including the proposed City Council hearings, advocacy fair, and any other actions.
  • Public Relations / Media – Develops all materials to be shared with the public, including flyers and social media. Connects the week of events to media such as radio stations, local and independent newspapers, and advertising resources and opportunities.
  • Street Team Outreach- Reaches out to people experiencing homelessness, other colleges, universities, service providers, and faith communities to be involved in the events. This may include hosting speakers, organizing independent events, and promoting the Sleep-Out.
  • Donations and Food - Organizes donations and the process of distributing them at the Sleep Out. Organizes donation drives at faith communities, campuses and community groups; reaches out to local missions for support.
  • Logistics and Safety- Helps to execute the Sleep-Out—does the legwork to accomplish the goals set in the general body meeting. Will develop safety plan for night of the Sleep-Out.
  • General Meeting- This meeting will determine our framing and messaging and will make decisions about the program for the Sleep-Out. This will also be a space for the group to study strategies and tactics to accomplish our goals. We will meet October 5, October 19, November 2, and November 16 at 811 Cathedral Street. We will also have weekly phone calls on Fridays at 4pm for report back from committees. Phone: 712-775-7000; Access Code: 974666#

Our next meeting will be on Monday, 9/30, at 6:30pm – a potluck at Rachel’s House (3150 Remington Avenue). This will be a great opportunity to engage in further discussion of the various committee tasks, as well as to share delicious food and camaraderie! We hope you can make it!

Please mark your calendars:

Next meeting: 9/30 @ 6:30, 3150 Remington Ave
General Meetings: 1st & 3rd Saturday, 12pm, 811 Cathedral St.
Weekly Check-ins: Every Friday at 4pm (location TBD), or Call-in: 712-775-7000, access code: 974666#

Please feel free to get back to us with any questions, and to let us know if you would like to join a committee. I have attached a spreadsheet of committee members, as well as some pictures from last week’s awesome planning kick-off!

We look forward to your involvement in these events!

Matt,

Thanks for taking responsibility for this. I am eager to continue receive these emails, in part so that I may share this information with both of my classes.

Best wishes,

Jeff
