Is anyone interested and willing to do some benchmarking? Specifically, I am interested to see if anyone would be willing to collect from the latest budgets of a sampling of CT towns and other comparable cities nation wide and benchmark their spending on some of our biggest categories against ours. It would mean looking through their budgets on a high level (I don't think you would need to dig too far) and get say police, fire, education, healthcare, pension, workers comp and their overall tax collection and number of residents. I would be happy to work with a prospective volunteer to tweak the list of data to collect.
While this might be something management partners may do, this data could be useful this year in our budget hearings with the BOA and their final vote on the budget. I don't believe our BOA members really know how to assess whether the spending/revenue categories are reasonable as they have no point of reference except our spending last year and previous years. I think that is too myopic and some other towns/cities would make their evaluation more valuable. I am working on a number of other related initiatives and therefore would love some help with the benchmarking.
