to NHEE Connect

Hi everyone,

It’s Leigh Ann — NHEE Administrator — here to let you know about a few great opportunities this summer and fall to connect with NHEE board members and staff. Whether you're looking to volunteer, explore, or get your hands dirty (in the best way), we’d love to see you out there!

🐛 Join Me for the Caterpillar Count – July 21 and Beyond!

I just signed up to volunteer for the Monarch Larva Monitoring Project — and I hope you’ll join me! This summer, NHEE Organizational Member Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is monitoring monarch caterpillars as part of a national citizen science initiative.

📍 Pemi Oxbow Preserve, Holderness, NH
🗓 Monday mornings through the end of August (I’ll be there July 21!)
💵 Free – advance registration requested
🔗 REGISTER HERE

We’ll be searching local milkweed patches for monarch eggs and caterpillars. Whether you can come once or every week, your help contributes to real scientific research and monarch conservation. All ages welcome (youth must be accompanied by an adult).

Let me know if you're coming — I’d love to see some fellow NHEE’ers there! 🌿

🛶 Paddle Squam Lake with Kyle – July 26

Join NHEE board member Kyle Salmons for a half-day paddling adventure on Saturday, July 26 from 8 AM–12 PM. This trip is being offered by NHEE Organizational Member Squam Lakes Association, and explores Moon and Bowman Islands with opportunities to hike, eat lunch, and practice essential lake navigation skills.

You’ll learn about boater etiquette, compass and chart use, and get comfortable paddling and docking — no experience needed!

📍 Start at Squam Lakes Association headquarters
🛶 1-mile paddle to Moon Island, then on to Bowman, then back
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 All ages welcome (youth must be accompanied by an adult)

🥾 Trail Work Weekend with Ashleigh – October 17–19

Looking ahead to fall? NHEE board member Ashleigh Roberts invites you to volunteer with Chatham Trails Association, which maintains ~35 miles of trail around Evans Notch. No experience is necessary — just a willingness to lend a hand!

🏕️ Free to volunteer – cabins and meals (Friday dinner to Sunday breakfast) provided at AMC’s Cold River Camp
🛠️ Tools and training included
🗓️ October 17–19 – arrive Friday, work Saturday (full day) and Sunday (half day)
🌲 Work 16 hours in a year and earn a White Mountain National Forest parking pass!
🔗 More info and register at chathamtrails.org

We hope to see you out there — thanks for all you do to support environmental education in New Hampshire!

While these events aren't organized by NHEE, they’re offered by NHEE Organizational Members or close community partners. If you’re attending something and there's still space, we encourage you to share it! Finding new ways to connect with fellow NHEE members is what this community is all about.

Warmly,
Leigh Ann Reynolds
NHEE Administrator
