i have submited a patch to the sourceforge tracker:

Its about how to check if an index exist or not, currently it only
test if the "segments" file is present, it could fail because the new
lucene versions use a segments.gen file, plus a sequential generation
segments_xxx file. So I change to call a lucene IndexReader.IndexExist
static function, that takes in account this cases.
By the way, what is the best place to submit patches to NHS?, I have
seen the sourceforge nhcontrib project, the files section in this
mailing list, but both of them have very small patch number.
