Dear Friends,
Spring is here, and with it the 23rd annual Baker Ponds Butterfly Count is now less than four months away (July 11th or 12th). As in prior years, we’ll be posting photographic substantiation of observations in iNaturalist, with the goal of obtaining at least one photo of every species we observe. For those of you who have an iNaturalist account and plan on posting observations, you can join the BPBC 2026 project here. As in previous years, I’ll make sure each survey group includes someone with a camera with sufficient zoom capability to photograph butterflies from a distance.
If you’re interested in joining us for the count, please sign up using the following registration form:
Baker Ponds Butterfly Count Registration
And remember, no butterfly identification expertise is required—just an interest in being out in nature and observing these beautiful insects. Each count group will include someone with butterfly identification experience.
If you have questions, you’re also welcome to email me at bakerponds...@gmail.com.
For those who live some distance from the Wentworth/Orford area, you may want to consider one of the other butterfly counts held across the state by clicking Find a Count. And, of course, you’re always welcome to participate in more than one count.
I hope to see many of you at butterfly counts across the state. Your enthusiasm and dedication make all the difference in advancing our understanding of New Hampshire’s butterflies. Let’s make 2026 another great year—we’re all hoping for a bounce-back from last year’s disappointing numbers!
Best,
George
