Our guest speaker Rick Cech will present The History of Natural History: The Stream We Swim In.

Older than science! More powerful than a scholastic allegory! Able to leap broad cultural shifts in a single bound! It's natural history, an oral folk tradition, begun in the Renaissance, whose group values have persisted through time little changed, sustained by direct community mentoring and participation. Often passed off as a benign distraction -- or as an effete pastime of aristocrats -- nature study is in fact a rigorous avocation that has played a significant role in shaping our modern understanding of the world. Come reflect on our collective involvement in this engaging pursuit, now playing in its mid-sixth century at an open space near you.

Rick Cech is an active field naturalist, author and photographer. He is an affiliate curator at Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History in Entomology and past president of the Linnaean Society of New York. Among other publications, he is the author and photographer of Butterflies of the East Coast: An Observer's Guide (Princeton, 2005). He has taught butterfly identification and nature photography at the New York Botanical Garden, and given programs on varied topics at numerous nature associations. He co-authored the National Audubon Society Regional Guide to Florida and introductory chapters of the Sibley Guide to Bird Life & Behavior, and produced text and photographs for a series of regional introductory guides to butterflies. Rick's photography has been widely published in books, articles, photo exhibits, and museum displays (including at the American Museum of Natural History and Bronx Zoo). He has led nature trips since the early 1980s.
