Today has been Banded Hairstreak Day!
First encountered three on the Federal Hill network in Milford/Hollis.
Then a visit to Burns Hill in Milford, NH turned up more three additional Banded Hairstreak!
I had initially written about Burns Hill when the summit blueberry were in bloom--attracting elfin and skippers though unfortunately not the hoped for White M!
Burns Hill had great variety, while numbers continue low.
The lower area near the parking lot has a grassy field hosting dogbane, milkweed and vetch.
Today a Painted Lady was in the mix in this area--always fun to view.
The climb to the summit is often in dappled sunlight with much oak.
Right off the parking lot just entering forest a Northern Pearly-Eye sought out areas of sunshine a terrific surprise.
Just off the summit in dappled sunlight area experienced a wonderful bustle of activity!
In addition to the Banded Hairstreak, a Mourning Cloak, and American White Admiral were photographed. Two Tiger Swallowtail were too fast for the observer along with a likely Spicebush Swallowtail. It was so nice to witness all this while mostly standing in shade!
The variety of habitat/nectar sources makes this a terrific location to search for lep throughout the season
