Someone named Chris Roberts posted excellent photos of an adult Whooper Swan on the Facebook group ‘Bird Watchers of New Hampshire’ saying that he found it today near Rye (see photo attachment). I’m unfamiliar with if there might be known escaped Whoopers in this area, but this species is also a potential European vagrant so thought I’d pass along the sighting. -Alex Lamoreaux

Hi Alex and others.  The Whooper Swans of Rye have a long (and sometimes comical) history that dates back over 20 years. They wander around the seacoast. In recent years a single bird has been seen at a variety of locations. It is presumed that they all are escaped from a local breeder in Rye.

Hi Steve Mirick,
Thanks for reposting about the origin of the Mystery Whooper Swans!
I forgot what folks said to include in eBird postings so that myself and others can continue to share via eBird “details” that these swans maybe part of the domesticated group that was raised in Rye rather than vagrants.
Do you have suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
