While working today on the shores of Little Lake Sunapee in New London I was very surprised to hear at least two Fish Crows. The birds were quite far away but their calls distinct even at a distance. While not an Earth-shattering sighting overall, this is my first sighting of this species in the Lake Sunapee area. Fish Crows are abundant in the coastal area, Concord area and around the Lakes Region and I’ve had them once before in the Connecticut River Valley years ago, but have been absent in the Lake Sunapee area in my birding career. There are some eBird reports, but I would lean to the side of some of these being immature American Crows mistaken as Fish Crows considering the time of year they were reported. Who knows if this is a sign of a trend of range expansion, but it is still very cool to observe them in the area. My first of the year to boot. My eBird checklist below has audio I collected.
