I would appreciate hearing of any migrating flocks of crows that anyone has seen this fall especially at the Woodmont Orchards in Hollis. Dates and times would be helpful.

A couple of years ago I was able to coordinate migrating crows that must have been coming down the Merrimack River and then up over the orchard with crows seen an hour later passing over the Mt. Wauchsett Hawk watch. Crows migrate about 20 miles an hour and that mountain is about 20 miles SW from Woodmont.

I have the hawk watch data for crows this fall but wonder if there are any sightings. Do let me know.

Thanks,
Dana

Good morning,

I commute 2-3 days/week from Auburn, NH, to the New England Quilt Museum in Lowell where I am curator. (I throw this in here only because the current exhibit titled "Animalia" has several art quilts with birds in starring roles!)

Often from now through the winter on my drive home along the Merrimack River and up I-93, I will see huge flocks of crows heading to the winter roost phenomenon in Lawrence, where tens of thousands of crows gather. On Saturday last, I stopped just before getting on the highway in Methuen as I noticed a large number of crows streaming southeast. From the parking lot where I stopped and counted for maybe just 10 minutes, I counted close to 400 birds. I'm a newbie to birding, so for once, they came in streams of 10-15 birds, and I found I could easily count many groups of 5. I'm learning!

I hope to take the time one late afternoon soon to detour into Lawrence on my way home. I've heard it's worth the trip.
